Well my here's my last review. Thanks for a year of weekly videos and weekly discussions, every monday. We didn't miss a week, although I missed a few. Faces changes over time but a few kept poping back up. I started this based on a 5 hour conversation with kionon over his KOR video, and in many ways it's been a success. I hope to participate in the future.
Kionon will be taking over, I'll let him post what he'll be doing.

21:02 * G_Q is getting it uploaded now.
21:02 <pankyy> mmmmmm so
21:02 <quadir> one year ago I started the amv-review with kionon, based on a 4 hour discussion of his KOR video
21:02 <pankyy> this is anime?
21:03 <pankyy> strange indeed
21:03 <quadir> this the last review I'll be leading, so consider this season 1
21:03 <pankyy> why?
21:03 <nunchuck> because it's end of season 1
21:03 -!- Kionon [~Malachite@51C2817C.332132BE.90ED1D7B.IP] has quit [Ping timeout]
21:03 <quadir> the video we're doing tonight is not strickly an AMV by the org's standards, although it is an animated music video
21:03 <Driftroot> hehehe
21:03 <quadir> the movie it's from is not japanesse
21:04 <quadir> so consider this immitation champaigne if you want to
21:04 <pankyy> mmm, so, this will be your last review only because this will be considered season 1 or you'll be gone ?
21:04 <quadir> pankyy: I might attend future reviews, but I won't be playing a major role in organizing them anymore
21:04 <quadir> kionon will be doing season 2
21:05 <pankyy> ah
21:05 <pankyy> i see
21:05 <quadir> this video has a few interesting things about without even watching the video
21:05 <quadir> 1) it was featured in "smashing magazine" at the start of the month
21:06 <nunchuck> wuts that?
21:06 <pankyy> the amv or the series?
21:06 <quadir> the amv
21:06 <Driftroot> AH that's where I saw this!! I knew it was familiar!!!!
21:06 <quadir> smashing magazine is a web zine from what I can tell for graphic artists
21:06 <Driftroot> That would be an affirmative.
21:06 <quadir> they often feature animation work, including remixes
21:07 <quadir> from there I've been seeing steadily pop up posted on several of the video aggregators I take note of
21:07 <Driftroot> They're big into fantastic lists of things.
21:07 <quadir> seeing it
21:08 <quadir> so I'd say that it has a pretty good penetration into the web world, appearing on the front page, at least momentarily of a lot of heavily trafficed sites
21:09 <quadir> and it's an "amv" made completely outside of the org or any of the established amv breeding grounds, if you discount youtube as being one
21:09 <quadir> the fact that it uses animation that isn't japanesse means you'll never see it on the org
21:09 <pankyy> lol that remembers me the "amv" I made about ronaldinho and an advertise audio
21:09 <Driftroot> "breeding grounds..." god that sounds awful
21:10 <pankyy> it appeared in a lot of webs
21:10 -!- nolk- [user@synIRC-E00172D9.q.strato-dslnet.de] has joined #amv-review
21:10 <teya> heh, it does
21:10 <teya> though i'd count youtube to some degree
21:10 <quadir> so, enough meta about it, what did people think?
21:10 <teya> reading your op, i don't think i got it
21:11 <quadir> shouldn't just read what someone else has to say
21:11 <quadir> watch it, get your first impressions first :)
21:11 <teya> i did
21:11 <Rathisponge> I thought the video was interesting
21:11 <teya> and other than pretty pictures and decent song, it seemed a bit blank
21:11 <teya> i didn't pick up on a story at all
21:12 <teya> probably not their fault
21:12 <nunchuck> I really liked the mood that video created. I didn't get story at all though
21:12 <teya> nunchuck: i agree, nice mood
21:12 <Rathisponge> I understand what you mean about the lack of a story teya
21:13 <nunchuck> I agree with quadir. That scene with the bird is pointless and distracting and really didn't fit into the end
21:13 <Rathisponge> The editing didnt seem to follow with much rhyme or reason, or any I could pick up
21:13 <nunchuck> The logo is also distracting
21:14 <teya> yeah, logos are silly when you're already using proprietary stuff
21:14 <pankyy> a question to know something about the amv: is this in some way a movie ( meaning 1:30 ) or more than 3 episodes ( more source )
21:14 <Rathisponge> http://www.lyricsmania.com/lyrics/the_m ... 36284.html , here is a link to the lyrics
21:14 <teya> oh thanks
21:15 <Rathisponge> After reading them I still couldn't draw on much of a story though hehe
21:15 <pankyy> yeah, I've some hard time trying to understand these songs
21:15 <nunchuck> I really liked the ending. The scene where he dies in the middle of this snow desert is fantastic
21:15 <nunchuck> I could also actually see an attemp in music sync which was also really nice
21:15 <Rathisponge> It seemed as if something was drawing the life out of him nunchuck
21:15 <nunchuck> but there could have been done much more
21:16 <teya> story, not so much.. complimentary mood / subject matter
21:16 <pankyy> what happened at 1:45? I mean the scenex4 or x5
21:16 <teya> nunchuck: yeah, music sync worked
21:16 <nolk> is this an anime oO ?
21:16 <quadir> the story seemed pretty linear to me
21:17 <G_Q> http://umbrellavideo.com/tempvault/AMV- ... 0Volta.mp4
21:17 <quadir> nolk-: no, it's a non-jap movie
21:17 <Rathisponge> What story did you draw from this quadir?
21:17 <pankyy> quadir, can you tell me either it's a movie ( what I suppose ) or different episodes ?
21:17 <quadir> Rathisponge: it's really linear with the guy in the opening shot
21:17 <nunchuck> wuhuuu mp4 :D
21:17 <quadir> you can follow him through the whole amv
21:18 <Rathisponge> ah yes I see him in most scenes, but I couldnt piece it together
21:19 <pankyy> anyway, this amv doesn't 'finish'
21:19 <quadir> you have him at the house, with someone who dies, then him going to the airship, the airship landing, shots of all the death going on, flying in the airship and lowering a "canary" into the storm, more flying, arriving at the next city, a crash, him falling and then death
21:19 <pankyy> or at least, not completely
21:20 <quadir> I dunno if I'm interpreting it properly, or maybe seeing different people as the same person
21:20 <pankyy> that scene at the final is him dying? it's seems abstract then
21:20 <quadir> pankyy: I hear it's a movie
21:20 <quadir> I thought it might be a blood transfusion
21:20 <quadir> but I think nunchuck had it right
21:20 <teya> quadir: yeah i was a bit fuzzy on that. not too many distinguishing features
21:20 -!- Kionon [~Malachite@51C2817C.332132BE.90ED1D7B.IP] has joined #amv-review
21:20 <Rathisponge> hm interesting
21:20 <quadir> he's dying

21:21 <Kionon> Morning folks.
21:21 <quadir> the whole curling up thing in the middle of the frozen valey certainly doesn't look positive
21:21 <G_Q> Morning, Kio
21:21 -!- Kiarrens [www-data@synIRC-94E59AE3.hsd1.ct.comcast.net] has quit [Quit: CGI:IRC (EOF)]
21:21 * Kionon feels like shit. :|
21:22 <G_Q> You, too, huh? x_x
21:22 <quadir> one concept I explored a bit in my op was that a music/movie match could be "too much of a fit"
21:22 <quadir> that it makes the amv boring
21:22 <nunchuck> the lyric also "let me die"
21:22 <G_Q> It's interesting in the way it's presented.
21:22 <pankyy> Mhhm, it seems the whole movie isn't a movie but a short film of 28m
21:23 <pankyy> that would make sense
21:23 <G_Q> It's slow and a bit drawn out, but still has a very nice presentation to it.
21:23 <quadir> like can there be a point in that if the song matches the mood of the footage exacly, then was is being added here? what are they contributing to each other? they are both telling yo uthe same message
21:23 <Driftroot> This is what I call bludgeoning the viewer over the head with a "concept." Concept here being...death, I'm guessing.
21:24 <G_Q> True... but how do you not beat someone over the head with a concept like death, then?
21:25 <G_Q> Showing straight entropy or the roundabout death...
21:25 <Driftroot> You don't oversaturate the viewer with it. This "AMV" was just oozing...death. Song was, video was, it never left the dead end it was heading for. Is that what you meant, quadir, by the song and video being too much for one another?
21:25 <G_Q> It's a knife's edge between the two.
21:25 <pankyy> Lol yeah, it seems this short is all full of death, dark shadows and dark clouds
21:25 <Kionon> Oh my.
21:25 <Kionon> I'm late aren't I?
21:25 <quadir> yeah
21:25 <Kionon> Korea doesn't have DST.
21:26 <Driftroot> ^_^
21:26 <quadir> Kionon: :(
21:26 <quadir> Kionon: changed on sunday
21:26 <Kionon> Sorry guys. Forgot about the time switch.
21:26 <Kionon> In America.
21:26 <Kionon> Not here.
21:26 <pankyy> I don't know why I have the sensation that characters don't speak in the short..
21:27 <quadir> pankyy: cause it's just that artsy?
21:27 <teya> many shorts don't use speech
21:27 <Driftroot> Not sure they need to, with this much visual representation going on.
21:27 <teya> Driftroot: exactly
21:27 <pankyy> Even though I don't know how they would explain a huge disease and a cure for it that way
21:27 <pankyy> quadir: that's what it seems so from only watching this video
21:27 <Driftroot> wait, what cure?
21:27 <nunchuck> what disease?
21:28 <teya> disease makes sense.. lots of people dying
21:28 <teya> and they turned funny colours
21:28 * Kionon watches.
21:28 <quadir> nunchuck: they are shoveling people with "pink sores" by the wheelbarel full into pits
21:28 <teya> but i didn't see a cure
21:28 <quadir> nunchuck: sounds like disease is a good bet, and having not watched the movie, the main character could be a doctor at a patient, who just died
21:28 <Driftroot> I thought that was more like...pollution rotting their flesh or something. This is all highly mechanized...the machines have a very evil design about them.
21:28 <pankyy> bit of a huge title the short has 'The Mysterious Geographical Adventures Of Jasper Morello'. I bet nobody can remember it :P
21:29 * Driftroot watches again
21:29 <Driftroot> or maybe experimentation on people, he seems to be a very guilty man
21:30 <nunchuck> ah you mean 1:03
21:30 -!- trythil [~trythil@synIRC-B3F3DB12.static.twtelecom.net] has joined #amv-review
21:30 <nunchuck> where they throw those dead bodies into a "mass grave"
21:30 <Driftroot> Well, generally you don't treat people like that unless you're doing something bad to them.
21:30 <teya> or there are just too many dead
21:30 <teya> mass graves
21:30 -!- quadir changed the topic of #amv-review to: http://umbrellavideo.com/tempvault/AMV- ... 0Volta.mp4
21:31 <Driftroot> Er, I don't know, there did seem to be a priest standing on the cliff over the grave, but still, it's made to be a very disturbing scene, so I think we can assume it's not meant to be representative of a society that values human life...at least not those particular humans.
21:32 <nunchuck> I don't know if that could be a disease but it's certainly something horrible going on in the movie
21:32 <nunchuck> I would rather say it's the result of human industrialisation
21:32 <Kionon> wow shitty fownload speed s shitty.
21:32 <Driftroot> Plus, like I said, it seems like the machines are the big, important things here, the "things" with power - they're existing at the expense of human life. The humans seem rather inconsequential and weak next to them.
21:33 <quadir> I suggest not going too much into trying to reconstruct the plot of the movie without having seen the movie
21:33 <quadir> look more into the message the mv was telling you
21:33 <nolk> i think those "humans" are marsians after all :O
21:33 <Driftroot> I am.
21:33 <Driftroot> Martians? Or wait, martians?
21:33 <nolk> or martians
21:33 <Driftroot> What's a marsian?
21:33 <Driftroot> :)
21:33 <teya> it's hard to separate mv from original when we haven't seen the original
21:33 <teya> not sure what the mv changes
21:33 <nolk> marsmänchen in german :p
21:35 <Rathisponge> the only message I may have grabbed from the amv quadir , was the mass industrialization and possibly the detrimental effects, the song lyrics also seemed to fit into that somewhat
21:35 <Driftroot> I am not speculating at all about the original movie or whatever it was. I'm just stating that the heavily industrialized nature of the artwork, the way the people are portrayed as very small, thin and weak against the huge, powerful machines, says a lot.
21:36 <Driftroot> And if those machines are actually good things, then this guy did an excellent job of making them appear exactly the opposite.
21:37 <Rathisponge> the man who appears in most of the video also hooks himself up to a machine at the end which seems to draw out his blood or life force
21:37 <Driftroot> and what did he do to that poor bird!?
21:38 <Rathisponge> an experiment? Im not sure.
21:38 <quadir> steampunk is a bit like that
21:38 <nolk> i dont get the story :<
21:38 <nolk> watched it several times now :o
21:38 <quadir> what's sticking with me the most since I first saw it was the final scene really, for examply the reason nunchuck mentioned
21:38 <Driftroot> er, I think my Internet connection is about to go belly up...
21:38 <quadir> everything else seemed to be a pointless journey up to that
21:39 <quadir> despair seems like such a low note, and the song just didn't help me deal with it at all
21:39 <nunchuck> There is no actual storyline
21:39 <Driftroot> check it out, here's the premise: "The film opens in the city of Gothia, a smoky industrial metropolis where steam-powered dirigibles are the primary mode of transportation, and where a terrible flesh-eating plague is decimating the population. The protagonist, royal navigator Jasper Morello, is deployed by the government. He has difficulty concentrating on the task, however, as he is still stricken with guilt over the recent death of one
21:40 <nunchuck> If the maker wanted to really do a story he wouldn't have repeated serveral scenes
21:40 <quadir> DR: so the video could be a summary video
21:40 <quadir> nunchuck: hm, only one really repeated to detriment
21:40 <Kionon> WTF.
21:40 <quadir> nunchuck: everything else worked to form a story
21:40 <Kionon> My brain is too dead to deal with this.
21:41 -!- Fall_Child42 [~Fall_Chil@Dewel0per.panda.nut] has joined #amv-review
21:41 <Driftroot> erm, sort of, there's a lot here...basically, they find this weird monster that feeds on human blood whose OWN blood can cure the plague. "The film ends with Jasper, left alone, attaching a blood-sucking machine to his arm to feed the creature."
21:41 <Kionon> It was ultimately depressing.
21:41 <nunchuck> I guess the main focus was on the scenary though : industrialisation world destruction by humans mass graves filled with sick humans....
21:42 <Driftroot> So basically, the movie is a hell of a lot more bizarre than this AMV. lol
21:42 <Kionon> I think the AMV effectively did its job.
21:43 <nunchuck> it's not anime ^^
21:43 * quadir nods.
21:43 <Driftroot> Yah, we seemed to "get it" without knowing one thing about the movie.
21:43 <nolk> what monster
21:43 <Driftroot> I say "AMV" for simplicity's sake.
21:43 <nolk> i dont see a monster oO
21:43 <Kionon> I don't like it, but then, I don't like unhappy shit.
21:44 <Kionon> And this is unhappy shit.
21:44 <Driftroot> Info is here: http://www.search.com/reference/The_Mys ... er_Morello
21:44 <nunchuck> this huge black thing in 3:07 is the monster left bottom
21:45 <nunchuck> but I actually didn't see it myself the first time i have seen this video
21:45 <godix> I finally woke up just in time to see a steampunk mood piece. Whee. I'm going back to bed....
21:46 <Driftroot> That monster thing is quite scary...now that I know what it is. @_@
21:47 <nolk> its more like a plant to me
21:47 <Driftroot> Little Shop of Horrors meets Edward Scissorhands?
21:47 <quadir> whatever AMV animated music video, get off your high horse
21:47 <nolk> its animated :> !!
21:48 <Kionon> Ah I have no desire to see this video again though.
21:48 <Driftroot> I'm not on a high horse @_@ I didn't know what else to refer to it as.
21:48 <quadir> Driftroot: obviously I was talking to nunchuck
21:48 <nunchuck> hö?
21:48 <Driftroot> oh, sorry.

21:49 <quadir> we'll have bonus here with in another 8 mins, if you can hold out
21:49 <nolk> the movie got nominated for an oscar xD
21:49 <Driftroot> I think maybe there's a little lag going on...
21:50 <quadir> so what's the final verdict from people? did you like it?
21:50 <godix> I didn't like the video but the art style interested me enough I grabbed a torrent of the show.
21:50 <Driftroot> I did...but it made me depressed.
21:50 <teya> i think it was well done, i think i liked it
21:50 <teya> but yeah, depressing
21:51 <Driftroot> It was nice to watch an AMV without troubling myself over technicalities, this one's artsy style and concept just completely dominated the whole experience.
21:51 <nolk> i think the music fits but the scene selection didnt sum up anything for me
21:51 <quadir> good recap, but I didn't think it really enriched either song or movie, it doesn't became more then the sum of it's parts, and that bothered me a lot and my interest wayned
21:51 <nunchuck> I won't watch it again. I liked the mood but everything else was not well thought out
21:51 <Driftroot> It would be interesting to see what it looked like if the video footage itself wasn't so artsy. Methinks it wouldn't be as good.
21:52 <Driftroot> It's the quality of the source material that seems to attract attention to this AMV.
21:53 <quadir> sortof like that show people keep using where people's hair and cloaks are these beautiful texture maps
21:53 <quadir> or utena to a degree as well
21:53 <quadir> the first impression is often just the art itself
21:53 <Driftroot> What, Gankutsuou?

21:54 <godix> Gankutsuou
21:54 <quadir> yeah, that one.
21:54 <nunchuck> I hated that one xD
21:54 * G_Q wasn't as much a fan of it, either.
21:54 <quadir> the textures can be breathtaking, and have been in a few amvs
21:54 <nunchuck> boring as hell
21:54 <Driftroot> I'm currently rewatching it for a third time. AMV prep.
21:54 <quadir> when they are compressed well
21:55 <G_Q> The texturing was nice, but a bit too distracting sometimes.
21:55 <godix> never saw it but the art style was interesting. Which either means the show is totally kickass or the entire point of the show is 'look at this artwork!' so it sucks.
21:55 <Driftroot> I tend to skip the boring parts, admittedly. I can't believe how long it takes the plot to really get moving.
21:55 <nunchuck> I guess the second fits better to the show
21:56 <quadir> it's wow minion's vault just killed my upload with 1 minute left
21:56 <quadir> hm, how to upload this now
21:56 <Driftroot> godix: I felt kind of blindsided by he series, you pay so much attention to the unique beauty of it that what happens comes out of nowhere and eats you alive. Which is exactly what the Count was trying to do, so I think the choice of art in that series worked very well.
