Which is it usually? [Song or anime first or both?]

I get songs if they make me think of an anime, or if they have a catchy replay value I just have to see (make) in video format. I have cds, but I only rip the tracks that I'd use onto my comp. Basically every song in my collection was kept originally because it was a potential video. So, I acquire songs for the ideas they give me.
There are very, very few songs I listen to just because I like listening to them. They're on cd, and never go near my computer. Completely separate hobbies, almost. Music listening versus music browsing (with the intent of finding vid potential). I don't do much listening, but I do a ton of browsing.
When it comes to actually making an amv, I tend to pick the anime first and then go browsing through those 'potential/usable' songs till I find one that fits. It's rare that I'd start editing immediately after finding a song, so I tend to forget why it's in the collection when I'm ready to edit. I do a lot of browsing through playlists to find the best fitting song. Since I got the songs for the vid potential, I *always* find a song that fits the video I want to make. If I ever did hit a deadend, with all those songs, I'd probably give up on the concept until I remember it again later and have more songs to look through.

I prefer to have my song first, and then find the anime to match...
Obviously both song and source are important, but I find that the song holds more weight. I'm like moonie, where I usually have a theme or some such to my videos, and that theme comes from the song, so I like to have it first, and then match a source to it. :3

The ideas usually don't click until the music is playing, so i'd say the music is what does it for me. Although with my current project it was deep meditative thought or something like that. I have like 5 or 6 more ideas i'm sitting on that are all music-driven ideas.

Music first, even when the associated anime is pretty much drawn from thin air. Either I notice that the lyrics apply to an anime, or I decide that I'd really like a video done to that song. Sometimes it's kind of reversed and I think that the characters of an anime would fit well with a song (the anime's own plot be damned), but I never sit down and think 'time for a vid idea -- what song would go well with this anime?'.

I guess I'll be the oddity here (but hey, what else is new?
).
I tend to see the anime and go "oh, I know what would make a great vid..." and then I sit down and try to pick out a song if I don't already have one in mind. A lot of times, as I'm watching an anime, a song pops into my head that will fit, but sometimes I have to sit and listen to a few before I know what the song will be.
So, sometimes it's anime first, or both...but I've never had the song happen first...at least, not yet.

Usually, I'll watch an anime, and suddenly every song I hear afterwards will drop itself into some mental 'timeline,' where I see if I can edit to it or not. All of the ideas that seem vaguely workable get jotted down on a Word document labeled "Ideas for Vids," where I examine them more closely at a later point. I mentally throw out (but do not delete, as I never know when they might work for, say, a MEP) the ideas that seem not to work as well as I thought, and again examine the ones that remain. At that point, something usually just clicks, and I realize that the concept would be perfect (at least in my eyes). I rarely begin editing at that point, but the idea remains with me in vivid detail until I do - which could be days, weeks, months, or even years from when I first thought it up.
I don't make videos that don't click, because I've never been able to finish ones like that.
Occasionally, I'll hear a song that will click instantly with some anime I've already seen (the one that I keep labeling as "THE Video" in my journal is such a case*). However, this is infrequent, and most of my best ideas come within a few months of finishing an anime.
I try to edit with songs I like, but even ones that don't inspire "passion," per se, can often lead to innovative videos (I'm referring to a personal editing level - others may not agree).
*I actually read the manga much later than I watched the anime, so this may explain the delayed inspiration for the video.
To sum things up... it's usually this:
anime --> song --> potential video --> solidified idea (click) --> editing

X2 Those are the easiest and more fun edits.Kristyrat wrote:I find I edit the quickest and get into it the most when I find a song I just really want to edit to, and pair an appropriate anime to it.
Usually I get an idea from the song first. More than likely, if I try to pair an anime with a song by force, it becomes tedious and shows in the video. That's probably why I like working with multiple sources. It gives me a chance to work different ideas and characters into one song without having to plod through a single series.
