Also, I never said that I need to be magnificent. Isn't it natural to want to improve on each video? When I said it was "average," that was the point I was making - it feels like this one is a step back.
There's a big difference between "I want to improve compared to my past work" and "I am too good to be average," i.e. "I am better than you people." Most people are average, chica. That's what "average" means. Average does not mean bad.
Okay, but at what point in my original post did I say "I am too good to be average"? That's what's confusing me. I said that my video was going to be average - meaning, like all of the other videos I've done before (not any better) - and then you pinned me down as some egotist. : /

Your original response had no justification from what I said initially.

You missed out a few steps.

1. Export a decent quality beta of what you've done.
2. Delete all project files.
3. Whore the beta.
4. Wait ~1 year.
5. Chat-up cheap Aussie labour.
6. Outsource it to Australia.

After that, we outsource it to India just like the rest of our telemarketing industry

Why bother shelving? You have other ideas, right? I guarantee you, you won't be thinking "man, I wonder if that video I scrapped some time ago could have turned out better than this," when you do end up putting together a project that you reckon is a better usage of your time editing.

We're not really running out of time here, or resources (well... that's arguable), so I don't see the point in saving a project that you thought was destined to fail.

If you still like the idea, start all over again with a fresh approach next time instead of trying to modify the old one.
Agree. I think it's better to start over later than "repair" mediocrity.

I don't. A fresh view after awhile can let you more clearly see WHY it's medicore, and you can change those issues without losing what is working. If you delete entirely, you lose the good you did as well. Baby, bath water, etc.

I had the same reaction as Sarah when I first read the thread. It sounded like you meant 'average as compared to other people's videos'. Average compared to your own videos is slightly different. If you don't like your average videos, then scrap it or leave it till you can think of a way to make it into something you like. If you still like your average videos, I don't see why you wouldn't like your new average video. Wanting to improve with each vid is natural - it's a sign that the effort you put into bettering yourself is paying off. But I don't think you should feel obligated to improve. As long as you're not taking a big leap back to 'bad' with your new vids, your effort still shows in that you haven't forgotten all the things you learned to reach that 'average' level.

It comes down to what you enjoy about making amvs. If you like competing against yourself, then beware hitting a ceiling after a while. Burn out. If you like making videos, I don't think it matters if every single one is another rung higher on the ladder. As long as they're still on the ladder and not down on the floor, you haven't regressed to a newb. If you're enjoying yourself and you like the finished product, it doesn't matter how it compares to your other vids. It's yours and you had fun making it and you like it.

If you dislike not improving because not improving means you're not putting enough effort into the video and you feel guilty, like you let yourself down, then that's a different matter. Why aren't you putting in as much effort as you feel you should be? Don't like the concept enough? Not in the mood? Burn it to cdr and pick it up later if you want. But don't force it. Go find something you like better. Forcing yourself to do something you usually do for fun makes that hobby a chore. That defeats the purpose of having the hobby. Unless you're a masochist. ;p

i agree with Ari, usually when i come to that predictament i usually end up burning the project and coming back to it latter. usually when i run into this type of situation its mostly with lack of footage and just editing to see what i can do with the footage at the time seeing if i need to go and add more footage later if i need to.

Oh gasp! You people are talking about what my sister likes to call "Mega-Craps". *shudder* I get enough of those at home. Mega-Craps are her way of telling people she has a short attention span and doesn't want to make a whole video.

Now, however, if your "unfinished business" is arranged in such a way that it flows nicely, or that the clips used in the video are whole ideas that are just really really short, then you may have something.

But as I say, I hate things that come to a screeching halt when they're going so well.
