I turned 27 last week, and normally feel like everyone's cranky spinster aunt here, so the range is nice to see. I'm a big supporter of seeing what a variety of people can do with a particular hobby, rather than always seeing the same kinds of viewpoints (no offense to the usual demographic).

I only started this a couple of years ago, so I guess I was 24. But then, I didn't start watching anime with any regularity until I was out of college. Good thing, too; I probably would have stayed up far too late on school nights.

I know what you mean. I don't normally give up too much personal information online, but since this is for the sake of science, I'm 25 years old. I went to AnimeCentral this year (it was my first anime con but I've been to gaming cons before like GenCon and Origins, which have a small bit of anime stuff by association) and I felt like such an old geezer! I had no idea there would be so many high-school and younger fans, especially considering the cost of buying anime videos and going to conventions! (I can barely aford it myself!)

Anyhow, I started watching anime freshman year in college, so I would have been on the upper end of 18 at the time... I decided to get into AMVs while I was at ACen, so it's only been a month or two, and I'm still getting started with my first one. (I'll upload it and let you all know when it's done!)

I'm going to save my thoughts on whether I think age matters for later, because putting them here would make this post _way_ too long! ^_^

I started like a month before I became 15, and now i'm 16...

back then, i didn't know about the AMV org or anything.. and i just had 56k.. and i just compared myself to some random DBZ vids my cousin showed me and said he found randomly on kazaa.... (mostly them DBZ Brolli videos with Mortal Kombat) I didn't know that timing existed back then..

Pah, children. Zygotes comparatively. I joke, I'm a high school teacher so I'm surrounded by youngsters all day long. Kids are getting.. odd, these days. Or maybe, I'm just losing whatever residual sense of humor that I used to have. I mean, blowing up toilets *used* to be funny right? On the other hand I have horribly insulting things written in Latin on the walls of my computer lab (I just make stuff up when parents ask what it means), and show AMV's during classtime.

While I've noticed that age isn't really a true determination of skill, talent, or even intelligence what I have noticed is that it makes a difference in terms of resources.

Time: Younger > Older. Having a job, rent, kids, pets, pool, etc eats away at your life like you wouldn't believe. Fortunately I can edit at work and get paid for it, so it's a wash for me.

Money: Older > Younger. Nothing beats actually having your own money. Say you want a box set of whatever, you just go get it, or order it. Need a massive supply of mountain dew? Solved.

Enthusiasm: Younger ~ Older. Depends on the individual. I will say that the more experienced editors do tend to produce much more sophisticated fare on the whole. So maybe 'stick-to-it-ed-ness' is an age factor.

As for me, I'm 35, but I've been exposed to editing years ago, when I used to do CG. Oddly it never even occurred to me to make AMV's till I saw one entirely by accident.

well going beyond a certain level, yes age would make a diference, in that the amount of experience you have in life is shorter, thus effecting your maturity, interests, tastse, and general experience. A 5 year old for example almost probably would never be able to make a good AMV if you sit him/her infront of a computer and left him/her to figure it out him/herself. a 20 year old on the other hand, has alot more previous experience that would help him/her to figure it out easier. ofcourse there could be the rare exception of a prodigy. I suppose this leads back to actuall experience mattering more than age, but it is also true that it is different for each of us, and also relys on natural talent/ability aswell. So realy alot of factors play into it, age included, but not as much as others IMO.

I'm 23, to be 24 in july. Been editing since I was..... 23 ;p been into anime much longer though, I think 15ish, not sure. Only recently heard of AMVs or rather found out what they were exactly, oddly enough.

...and I did stay up too late on school nights; it was just from playing Diablo I and writing really bad fanfiction. I couldn't have afforded con trips or DVDs anyway, so it's actually just as well that I didn't start watching the stuff until I was out of school and employed. Madbunny's breakdown makes a lot of sense, particularly in that aspect.

made music videos for about a year (from when i was 14)

first 2 months -bought adobe premiere book and read it

and now im 15 and been making ever since i was 14
i must say i didnt make much music videos
made only around 6 completed ones and around 15 incompleted ones
it takes a while for me to get the right idea on my mind and sometimes it doesnt feel right when i make it, and i leave it incompleted
going to hopefully learn how to use after effects

Are you asking about those round black discs, with grooves, that make music? I was 52 when I made my first amv, that's why my tastes in music tend to be 60s-70s rock. We are what we grew up with. 8)

I stayed up way to late in college too, playing cards, "Buck Euchre" and "Sheepshead". We only had one TV in the dorm that only got four channels. We weren't allowed to have them in our rooms, no refridgerators, no cooking appliances, ( we had an outlaw coffee maker) , only one phone for the whole dorm. Cable TV was still a long way off as were computers and all the digital devices. Stereo record players were the extent of the electronics we had at college. Even calculators came a couple years later. Times have changed, we had no way to do the things you take for granted now. Young people show little fear in diving into our digital world. This is a great advantage you have, but also a great disadvantage in the time it eats up from your lives.

Wrong.

You have the chance to watch as our entire civilization changes and metamorphoses into something unique and new. With the advent of technology our world is changing and shrinking as it his few times before. The only recent parallel that I can think of would be the introduction of mechanised transportation at the beginning of the century. Our technology is expanding in such a way as to let todays youth learn and share at an unprecedented rate.
While not perfect, just the fact that we can have something like this forum with members from all over the planet participating and sharing similar likes would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. Some of our members (for that matter some of my students) are making videos of a quality that rivals major studios in terms of quality and skill. I am contantly amazed at the creative spirit that I see on this site.


Had you been born later, then you would be 'part' of the changing system and not see the larger picture. If you were too old, then you wouldn't be able to appreciate what you see. I had a Grandmother that was born in 1904. She watched the world change around her and turn into something familiar and comfortable into what we have today. Are comptuters the new 'airplane' or 'automobile'? Only time will answer that one.
