Would tagging videos be useful for you or the community?

Post by kaixer » Tue Mar 13, 2007 8:00 pm

If you can get your video tagged with lots of Flickr-like tags by many other people, would that be useful for you?

What if we can get most of the AMVs online tagged? How would that be useful to the AMV community? To easily find that the video clip you want to insert into your mix? For better video search? For browse AMV using tags clouds?

Thoughts?

while not perfect, the super search is pretty good

we already have some "tags" such as action, drama, serious, dance, etc.
since I'm pretty sure you have to enter an anime to host a video locally you can also search by that (similar thing with music)

I just realized that you can search by the words in the video comments

so my opinion: we already have enough things to help facilitate efficient searching (and even one for inefficient searching, yay for random video button)

what do you mean by tagged?

are you talking like "search tags" like they do on the tube and livejournal?

if so what Karudo said...

really i dont see how many more "tags" we can use to describe the videos here its not like the tube where they have masses ammounts of different kinds of videos..

O.o

or do you mean like other people tagging it to recommend it.. we have a few systems to help you find videos that have been liked by other people

1. the top 10%
2. the star scale
3. the recomendation forums
4. top favorite's list
5. announcements help
6. most commented videos
7. word of mouth

No offense, but I think someone spent hardly enough time on this website and a little too much time on other websites. I think the .org <s>tagging</s> database system is very functional and sophisticated, not to mention very well-tailored to AMVs specifically.

Or is that something entirely different you had in mind?

I'm in the same boat as Otohiko. While tags work well on sites like LJ I just can't see them working well here.

That right there is a good reason not to tag videos here. We promote the use of dvds for source clips. We don't support using other people's amvs as source footage for quality reasons (if nothing else).

As far as tagging amvs for subject matter, I wouldn't mind having an option to list the main character/s featured in a particular video. That would make searching by pairing a lot easier. But the "word search" option does work for amvs with detailed descriptions. As long as people put their own "key words" in the description, others can find their vids by searching for those words. The descriptions can be used in google, too, if the org search function stops on the first page of results. ;p

That's a good point I hadn't noticed at first glance. While I can see certain tags (for instance pairings) I can see how that could be abused. In that case I'd say no except if they were very specific and monitored. I also have to wonder how much of this comes from you-know-where, where tags are a big feature.

I still don't quite see how that'd be more useful than super search. I mean the thing certainly searches descriptions as well - you can stick whatever info you want there.

It might build up a classification system beyond anything that currently exists (try figuring out how to shoehorn, say, "videos that make me cry" or "totally trippy" into the existing filters). If you maintain counts of identical tags on a video, you can get some interesting statistics there, too.

Perhaps if you tracked when and how often a user changed their tags on a specific video, you'd get some good preference data over time. (Maybe.)

At the same time, I worry that if such a system were improperly implemented (see: slashdot) it would quickly become useless. In slashdot's case, people use tags to respond to questions, which is rather dumb when you see tags like "yes", "no", and "maybe".

This site would probably avoid those issues, since we're not tagging articles / article summaries, but analogous problems might crop up. Haven't given it enough thought yet.

Actually one of the most common myths about #AMV is that we actually talk about AMVs. I've been active in IRC for years and the only time I can remember talking about AMVs is when someone has just finished a video and wants to pimp it.
