Note: I realize there is some rather strange echo in this video. I have since stopped using that method of converting, but at the time I really didn't know what I was doing. I may release a fixed version someday but for now I'm going to leave it as it is as a lesson to myself (and a reminder to do something different)
This is a video I've wanted to make for a long time, upwards of a year. I first heard the song "Black Balloon" on Koopiskeva's "Typically Lost Something Forever" video and proceeded to buy the album, "Dizzy up the Girl" as soon as I could. Black Balloon has always been one of my favorite tracks, and almost as soon as I heard it I thought of Anthy from the Utena series.
So, a year later, here it is. I decided to use only the movie for artistic reasons, and the difference between wide and fullscreen after having considered using the series briefly. It took around 9 hours over 3 days to get completely done, not counting encoding time which was an additional 4+ hours. One thing I love about the music is how, like the movie, you think you have a happy ending and then it throws something else at you, in the same way the movie suddenly throws that weird car chase in at the end. As such I'm particularly fond of the last third of it, which fell together nicely. One thing about the video is that it's not exactly linear, especially the last half, since I made it to fit the music more than the original story. I ran it by a friend to make sure they understood what was going on just in case before premiering this.
One final note is that the last scene was originally going to show some slight nudity on the two girls, but since I'm considering entering this in a contest I decided against it at the last minute. The scene I was considering isn't too explicit, but I changed it just to be safe. There is girl/girl kissing, but considering it's Utena that may be stating the obvious. Enjoy!
Note: I was approached by an Utena fan who suggested uploading this on Hosatchel as part of an Utena archive, and I just want to make it known that I do not want this video put there for quality reasons. It literally took hours of compression to get the quality to the point it is now, so please don't do it. Thanks.
