Does too much exist? (AMV wise)

Post by guy07 » Thu Dec 07, 2006 11:36 pm

Ok, so i recently switched from 56k to wireless, and needless to say, i went download happy. I must of downloaded 50 videos in two months at the very least. But recently, i'v been watching videos i download and finding myself sick of them before they are over. I never though i'd say this, but i'v been watching too many amvs. And they were good vids too, i should like them, but i don't.
Anyone else have this problem, now or ever?

Just because ADV has a giant horse, that doesn't mean it has unlimited flesh. Eventually your going to beat the dead horse into nothing. This is why you make more!

Yes, I have experienced this. I've downloaded almost five thousand videos from this site, and I have to admit that I've closed many of them before they were finished - probably a majority. I usually go by the twenty second rule: if I'm not entertained within twenty seconds (not including intros), then I'll skip halfway into the video. If I'm not entertained by the middle twenty seconds, I'll close it. Videos like that automatically get a 3/5, provided the video quality is watchable. Videos like this with subtitles or extremely poor quality get a 2/5. A video that does all of this wrong, and doesn't even begin to connect the song and the anime gets a 1/5. And yes, even if it's a 4/5 or 5/5 video, sometimes I find myself wanting to close the window. Great editing, but it's just not something I'm into occasionally.

Going back to the twenty second rule, though... the only time I'll keep watching a mediocre video is if the concept truly interested me, or if I particularly liked the song. Beyond that... well... twenty seconds is more than enough time to be entertaining, even in the slowest of ballad videos. If a video can't be interesting during that time, then it's doubtful that it will be interesting at any other part.

Maybe some people think that that's not giving the videos enough of a chance, but it seems to work for me.

Eh, not exactly. But I only download a few videos a week it seems, and most of them are for op exchanges, or if I come across a song I like put to anime I know. Usually I'm just too lazy to download random videos, and I've found that doing that isn't always a good idea - there are a LOT of crappy videos out there.

Also, I know that if I end up really liking a video that hasn't gotten a lot of attention, I'm going to feel compelled to leave an opinion, which is time-consuming, considering the length of the ops I write.

In the three or so months I've been here, I probably haven't even broken the 200 download mark, and I'm pretty content with the videos I have saved on my hard drive or CDs. If I really like a video that I recently downloaded, I'll probably forget about it in favor of an as-good or better video that I've had for a while, just because it's more familiar. It makes it really tough for me to like new videos for very long, and it kind of discourages me from downloading videos unless they're videos by someone I know around the .org.

It's not that I get sick of videos, it's just I'm happy with what I already have.

That is a common problem for watching too much, but yet not enough :).
I think you need a way to watch amv. Just watch your favorite genre, for example, or watching amv recommended by other.

I am still a dialup user, so i only watch amv recommended by my friend :D. I think it is good enough for me now.

You're generous. I give it 10 seconds. If it hasn't hooked me in yet I'll flip through halfway and watch a couple scenes. If that doesn't hook me it gets deleted and gets a 1 star. After all if I found the video so boring that I couldn't even watch it then it doesn't deserve higher than a 1. Sometimes I'll do a 2 if it looked well done but just isn't my type of thing.

As for the original question, yeah I got bored of AMVs. Awhile ago I quit actively looking for stuff and just relied on the 'if it's announcement thread has at least 10 replies and they aren't saying it sucks then I'll try it'. Now I have around 30 videos on my HD that I haven't bothered to see yet. My new download rule is 'if it's by someone who doesn't suck, or someone who does suck but does it in a funny way, I'll download it. Fuck it if I don't catch an up and coming noob.' I'm starting to think those old timers who never see videos except at a con might be on to something.

5000 videos?

Holy crap, I've only been here less than a year after you have, but my download has only been is not even 400 yet. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not that jaded by AMVs yet, but I guess I just appreciate a good video quite significantly more before I started getting itchy and download something new. These days, I follow pretty much what godix said about watching the responses on the announcement threads. Other thing I do though is follow on some recommendations by people I know, so at least I'll know their taste in videos are trustworthy...

I guess this in the end meant to me that I haven't actually gotten overly bored with AMVs yet. Sure there might have been a bout of it during my AMV season (watching videos for Manifest comp can get tiresome when the videos are sent in and not something I intentionally picked myself), but for the most part, I think I've moderated myself enough watching these things to not becoming sick of them.

That is why I download sparingly.

On the other hand, I can't think of a video I stopped watching part-way through. That's just disrespectful, and I don't think one has a right to judge an AMV without seeing the whole thing.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

That's exactly how I am.

Wait, I'm not supposed to be disrespectful? When the hell did that start?

Anyway if this is a challenge let me know, I can point you to some videos that I bet only a few very twisted bastards could sit through all the way. A depressingly large number of those are in my profile although kitsuner still easily tops me for producing unwatchable crap.
