When people got all up in arms about copies of their omghardwork on hosatchel, or something like that.

I bet this had something to do with it, too.

Is it unethical to download a music video released back in the day (circa 2001-2004) and then take the same song, anime, and theme and create a video like it yourself but with much improved editing, video quality, and scene selection?
I would think it flattering.

I don't recall reading that before although I have looked through AMVwiki. Odd. I violate four of the six basic codes of ethics on a daily basis and without trying. I should take a stab at the other two someday just so I can make a clean sweep.

Hm... depends. If you were actually inspired by a specific video (which seems to be more or less what you're suggesting), then you might ask for the editor's blessing first. Of course, I'm assuming in this case that you liked the original video and you're doing this out of respect.

If you didn't like the video, and you just want to best it, you probably shouldn't tell the editor that you're doing it. It'll just cause unnecessary tension.

However, if you just saw this video and thought, "hey, that anime and song work really well together," with no real opinion on the video itself, then I don't see any reason why you shouldn't do your own version. It's not original, but sometimes an idea just has to be thrown in your face before you see how well it can fly.

Personally, I've had all three situations arise. Granted, I haven't actually made any of the videos with the "stolen" ideas, but I think I will make them eventually.

Anywho, just my thoughts on that.

Actually, as far as I can tell you have violated at least five. The only reason I don't say six is because I can't remember you ever bragging about using cracked versions of stuff.

I don't think there's really anything wrong with looking at an AMV, thinking 'I could do better', and going in and doing better. So long as it actually IS better and not some rip off.

I generally find it's not wise to admit the most recent legit program I own is a pre-release copy of windows 2000 that I got for free because I worked at a reseller at the time.

I haven't stolen others ideas. I've emulated other peoples styles fairly often but there's a different between emulating a style (especially for parody) and flat out stealing someones idea. Primarily that I admit what I'm doing so it's a fine line I guess.

I also don't recall ever trying to pass myself off as another user. Although I have a vauge kinda sorta memory of signing some QCs 'Phade' so maybe I have. OTOH I have a vauge kinda sorta memory of being happy in marriage so obviously my memory gets it totally wrong sometimes.

I was going to make an amv that had the same song/game but once I found out it was already made I scrapped it, considering it was hellova lot better than I imagined how mine was going to be. Not that it was discouraging or anything, glad someone already did it rather than me belittling or whatever.

I seen a few amvs that I thought it coulda been done better, hate to see a good song done badly. Not that I can do anything about it though, considering I'm not a good critic, didn't care about it enough, and soon afterwards I discovered super search :/

If I really cared about the song/anime choice and the possibilites on how great the combo would be and see it not done "correctly", then I might consider on "remaking/remastering" it, with/without the originators consent, pending on how "incorrect" it was (it just might turn out a completely different amv if done w/o consent).

I doubt that would happen to me though, considering the first thing I when get an idea is super search it to see if it was already done before and if there are any results that seems relevant to my idea I scrap the idea and think of a new one. That and I'd probably wouldn't care about it enough to dl and watch it and see if it was I had in mind or something.

Tell me, was the irony of saying this while your sig promotes a MEP that's nothing but ripping off a 4chan meme intentional or just a rather comedic mistake?

I worked so hard at trying to avoid their concept it just threw me off :/

but if i like an idea that im really excited about i will make it weather or not theres other vids to that combo...
