the "problem" is one line respones... they chatter like its aim... and theres 2-3 of them that do it at a time, which is usually after school around 3-4pm till maybe 7-8 pm... theres only one member who frequently uses journals that uses it for personal attacks... most of the "journal junkies" that use the feature all aim style... just tell him how retarded it is...
no one is using the journals to link to anything but maybe some slightly naughty uhh fan art.... and maybe links to banners... links to betas and other things like that...
ive never seen discussion on fansubs and where to get them, or anything on where to find cracked programs... so atleast those rules seem to be following over...
so the problem is that their discussions bump down some of the people who dont post as frequently... in truth i dont think they are seeking attention or publicity, they are infact just chattering...
the last person who used to purposly bump her name to the top of the list just for the publicity (kinda like bumping your thread on the announcement forums) probably realized that its not helping her or it was defeating her purpose and she stopped doing it... and she stopped doing it on her own (that is unless pms were exchanged that i dont know about)

But one-line responses only show up if you read their journals, which is voluntary. If you don't, then it doesn't affect you.
- so I'm guessing.)
So it is about the Recently Updated list? Why would that matter? New Vids on the Block doesn't matter, so ... why does that one matter all of a sudden? If you have someone on your buddylist, you see their entries anyway, right? (I don't use it much since I already have a Livejournal - wah wah emoJaddziaDax wrote:so the problem is that their discussions bump down some of the people who dont post as frequently...

Re: rule/guideline for journal usage
That's where rules come in, guidelines. I don't upload videos with explicit sexual content to local because it's against the rules. Yes, I probably should consider myself lucky that the rules here aren't outrageous and ridiculous. But I've been here so long I take it for granted that the rulemakers aren't morons so they aren't going to *make* outrageous and ridiculous rules. If they had, I wouldn't consider myself unlucky, I'd consider the website a hole in the ground for assholes I want nothing to do with.SarahtheBoring wrote:Well, as a yaoi editor, I hope you do realize how lucky you are that not everyone thinks like you.
I don't believe any of the rules or guidelines I proposed are outrageous or ridiculous. All I did was repeat the rules we have everywhere else on the website and suggest that they be put in place over this free-for-all section that is advertised on the main page.
What's the problem? That depends on who you talk to and on what day it is. When I started the thread it was people complaining back and forth in the journals about other people chatting back and forth in the journals. A few months ago it was me getting my brain burned by clicking the wrong link and getting an eyeful of poorly written sex on the last website I'd have expected to see that crap. I won't say who's been using his journal to make updates on his fansub hosting because I don't want to be the one to tattle on him, and I don't think they need an example to add the journals to a common sense rule already in place everywhere else on the site. The personal attacks depend on the day, too, because unlike the forum, we *can* edit our journals to "take back" or "hide" what we said. It's the "private" button.
Seriously, I didn't think they needed examples and clear misbehavior in order to make a basic guideline - ANY GUIDELINE AT ALL - for a popular section of their website.
I just want them to tell me if it's a freeforall and if they intend it to *stay* a freeforall. As long as I know 'They' won't suddenly, months down the line, realize the journals are a part of 'Their' website and should be treated as such. Things that used to get people in trouble are ignored now. What's to say things that are ignored now won't get people in trouble next year? I didn't think asking for a standard (guideline) would be cause for debate. If they ever decide to *make* a standard guideline, then we can argue about how much certain points are bad or unnecessary. This thread turned into a debate over whether a guideline is necessary at all. That's like arguing that there don't need to be rules in a forum.

I don't specifically remember reading anything about having conversations in it. And I definitely don't remember reading anything on that page about an entry with a couple of words or just one sentence. I suppose if it was important enough like: "THE WORLD IS ENDING!" Then I'm sure it would be a good journal entry.
As for the entries with small chit chat. I agree it shouldn't be done. As for journal entries with long replies to questions or events between two people, I'm sure its important enough. All thought I don't believe entries with nothing but faces are worthy of an entry... ... O.o ... Anyways, yeah I thought a lot about this topic for a while and reached this conclusion: "If what you have to say has a major significance, IE something you would want more then 1 person to read, then it is dignify able as an entry to a journal. If it is a response to someone it should probably be done with aim or a pm." I know I'm guilty of this in the past but after reading this post, I actually agree with ari. It's true that it corrupts the recent entries list and its not fair to the people that actually are using it diligently.

While I tend to agree with you on the fact that people are using the journals in a childish and immature manner, the real problem is that you can't make people act more intelligent.Arigatomina wrote: {stuff}
Some people like to write about their search for a job, or how their boyfriend/girlfriend is pissing them off. Neither of these is in any way related to AMVs, but it's still a valid journal entry. I personally find the one line entries to be anoying since it essentially ensures that the only people that will ever have a journal link up will be.. people with one line entries, instead of people with amusing, sad, or otherwise thoughts typed out. Writing letters to space as it were, essentially floating till someone finds them.
Probably the only real solution to it that wouldn't require moderation, or a set of rules that everyone would ignore is putting a timer on. Remember the post timer, how people used to complain and whine in the OT forums about not being able to post a reply withing X minutes? Same idea. Slow things down, and maybe put two whole thoughts into a journal instead of 4 half thoughts into 6 posts.

Just kidding, it's all
Kusoyaro: We don't need a leader. We need to SHUT UP. Make what you want to make, don't make you what you don't want to make. If neither of those applies to you, then you need to SHUT UP MORE.

No shit, It's the internet. That little problem is often solved by moderators disalowing the least intellegent acting among the group from being part of said group through harsh repremand or banning.madbunny wrote:the real problem is that you can't make people act more intelligently.

Yes, I wouldn't mind ditching the journals. Hell, I think...maybe 2 people I can think of actually use the journals as they were supposed to, and not like chat rooms. Hell, even I talk in it, because it's the easiest way to get someone's attention.
But a lot of the entries are so pointless and a waste of space, either flaming, or as above "bored", or "WOW JUBJUB HAS COOKIES", or mindless pimping of ones own AMVs (not announcing, PIMPING)
Maybe we should have a scanner to check the posts before they're uploaded? With that problem I bet afterall people who stop using it as a chat room because it would awhile to process, thus ruining the time for a chat room convo. I think that's a good idea, no flames would get through either.
