Because such filters tend to be easy to avoid, and I really don't want to have to think about what goes on in journal-land at all?The Origonal Head Hunter wrote:why not just filter out certain words and different spellings of those words?Kalium wrote:I'm just going to hop in here for a moment and point out that moderating journals would be an absolute pain.

Amen... (bows)Arigatomina wrote:Some of the issues being debated - Are journals to be used for conversation between members? What about long one-liner conversations that clog the 'new journal entries' list for days, weeks, on end? There should be some sort of limit, given that we have a chatroom attached to the site, and we have a pm option for private messeges between members. Some people use the journals to talk back and forth every five minutes. Is that a legitimate use of the journals? Were they intended for that?
Can we get a line added to the rules saying that journals "shall not be used to wage any kind of personal attacks"?

x2. But that's logic, and we can't have that.BasharOfTheAges wrote:I've found not looking at them to be the best answer to the problem though.
With all due respect, complaining that other people use journals in a different way than you would is like complaining that people are making AMVs from series that you don't like, "clogging up the site."
I... don't think it's for any of us to dictate how people use them unless they cause hardware/database/etc. problems on the backend. And I would wager that they haven't, because nothing has been done to "fix" them. I'd suspect, then, that they aren't broken.

I think it's more like complaining that they're making amvs with a subject matter we don't like. Or making a thousand mini-vids just so their names stay at the top of the "new vid on the block" list. We do monitor how people use the forums (because they're a part of this site) and we do monitor what sort of amvs people upload to local (because it's a part of this site). If journals are to be as unmonitored as direct-linked videos (the hentai and excessive violence that aren't allowed on local), then they shouldn't be a direct part of this site. Heck, we even monitor how our irc channel is used and it's not featured on the main page of the site.SarahtheBoring wrote:With all due respect, complaining that other people use journals in a different way than you would is like complaining that people are making AMVs from series that you don't like, "clogging up the site."
There's something wrong with having moderators in the irc room (a chatroom external to the site) and not even having a guideline for the use of journals that are featured on the main page.
A quick fix would be to just get rid of the "recent journal entries" list. Friends can use the 'journal buddies' for their unmoderated chatting. The only difference would be they no longer get to have their names flashed on the member main page every two minutes of every day.

Re: rule/guideline for journal usage
Normally, I agree with you, but this just wouldn't work. How am I supposed to add new buddies if I never see anyone who posts??? Not everyone whose journals I would like to read is already on my buddy list. Hell, some people who I might be interested in haven't even joined the site yet, I'm sure. That's not a "quick fix" at all, Ari.Arigatomina wrote:A quick fix would be to just get rid of the "recent journal entries" list. Friends can use the 'journal buddies' for their unmoderated chatting. Re: rule/guideline for journal usage
If you use the journals to greet new members, then no, it's not a fix at all. It would be just like taking away the "Intro" section all over again. I was aiming for an either/or. That's where that troublesome guideline comes in. I don't see why it's so hard to at least enforce the same rules in the journals that stand for the rest of the site (including irc).dj_ultima_the_great wrote:That's not a "quick fix" at all, Ari.
No personal attacks.
No linking to warez/downloadable anime.
No direct links to hentai.
There's some really basic rules. We don't even have that for the journals. I've seen people using their journals to write NC-17 stories like it's livejournal and readers are going to reply or something (and they do reply, encouraging them to continue). This isn't adultfanfiction.net. Other people use it to tell their friends when the next downloadable episode is available on their site (whether they link to their site or not). There are a lot of things going on in the journal that would get people banned if they tried it in the chatroom or on the forum. Whether or not chatting is approved is a moot point compared to some of the other things that go on. And yet the mods won't even place a "no personal attacks" guideline.
If it's going to be as unmodded as the aim chatroom, it should not be on the main page like we're advertising the place to do those things that aren't allowed anywhere else on the site because they go against site policy.

And you think we (in general) are justified in having videos yanked because we disagree with the subject matter.Arigatomina wrote:I think it's more like complaining that they're making amvs with a subject matter we don't like.
Well, as a yaoi editor, I hope you do realize how lucky you are that not everyone thinks like you.
That's using the feature in bad faith, disguising the real intent (publicity) as something else (chatter). I don't think talking a lot is using the journal feature in bad faith. I think people who chatter generally just like to chatter. Talking is a valid use for a journal. And I don't think we have the right to get on their cases about it, just as someone who releases 2 videos in 5 years doesn't have the right to get on the case of someone who cranks them out by the hundreds - in good faith.Or making a thousand mini-vids just so their names stay at the top of the "new vid on the block" list.
Is there a hentai / excessive violence problem on the journals? I'm getting lost at this point. What, exactly, is the problem? Their names pop up a lot on "last updated"? Is that a problem?
