The iPod with Video's screen is 2.5" measured diagonally, 4:3 aspect ratio, 320 x 240 pixel resolution, which is decently viewable. Although my PSP's screen is much preferable at 4.3" measured diagonally, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, 480 x 272 pixel resolution.
Although, he may be speaking of WMV codec 9 the codec a certain raw provider often use, wich I have had problems getting most software to read properly myself. Virtualdub, nor avisynth could read them properly. to use one in a project I had to work on, I ended up having to transcode it to mpeg2 in Nero, then feed that to avisynth.

I tried to transcode a WMV9 video to MP4 AVC and the audio un-synced at the very beginning. Most likely this is the problem that I've read that people seem to have with WMV.

Wow, let us hope I don't begin to ramble like that.

WMV:
First many use WMV, because Movie Maker is free and easier than other free methods.

Most good videos are in MPEG or AVI.

Lots of players play WMV; RealPlayer, Winamp, alomst everything else if you set it up right.

Ipod:
Ipod is evil. MP3 is inferior to CDs. Plus Sony and many others make way better MP3 players.

Playing a vid on Ipod must run that little shit battery out in like 2 seconds.

I have to agree with the others. Smash the Ipod like a watermelon with a hammer.

The Solution:

It is really really rude to the vid maker to do this, but you can convert WMV. It is a pain and figity, but it works.

It is so rude that not even I would do it. And I'm an asshole. I am not sure I should even tell you, but here it goes.

Use the direct show filter call in AviSynth and then encode with Vdub.

Well what else.....

#$^( Microsoft (Windows is a necessary evil. As much as I hate it.)

#(*^) Google (They are not as nice as they seem.)

Yeah Linux.

I don't see how converting a video to a different format is rude to the person who edited it...

Microsoft supporting mp4? Never! ;P

When MPEG was trying to invent a container format, two big important MPEG members, Microsoft and Apple, submitted their proposals. Microsoft's was based on asf, Apple's was based on mov.
Apple's format won.

Now, the important part: Gates hates Jobs. Therefore Microsoft packed its toys and pulled their support to the whole MPEG-4 thingy, despite being an important member of MPEG....
They even could support mp4 without any patent costs, but they don't feel like it.

It might change with Vista though, because Vista is supposed to support HD-DVD which uses mp4. Gates might hate Apple, but currently they hate Sony and its PS3 even more ;)

It is rude to change the format if the user chose a format for an artistic reason, say for a quality level, frame rate, protection, or compatiblity.

I guess most just get screwed into WMV. I have no idea why someone would ever use it purpose.

MS hates MP4. Of course MOV and ASF are both bitchy pains in the ass.

ASF to an extent is MP4 just half-assed or third-assed really. It was only ever really meant for streaming. Sort of a crap mutant combo of AVI and MP4 with the header at the start.

Don't worry to much about HD-DVD, both it and Blu-ray disc should play together with regular DVD.

PS3 is so going to kick ass. At least double the power of the 360, perhaps the most advanced GPU you can get, a whole department for the internet, and the return of some of the best games ever.

You know, unless the definition of 'artistic' has changed dramatically in the last five minutes, none of those are artistic choices. All of them are technical ones.

I don't think changing the format so you can view and AMV would upset anyone. Hell, change the format of my vids all you like, I would prefer you to be able to watch it rather than just let it sit on your desktop collection byte-dust.
