Hsien, I don't think that's something we should inquire into.

I've gotta both agree and disagree with you.

Myself and lots of friends truly did consider the year a slump, and I still partly do... up until AWA, which is what I'm sure you're referring to.

This is cool, because it means that people (LOTS of people!) had LOTS of REALLY good videos!

It's also a shame that so many were held off until AWA. This, of course, could have been for several reasons (maybe they just didn't get any decent concepts for videos until around the AWA time.. I know that's how it was for me).

If people have been sitting on videos for a while to send them to AWA, that's kinda sad, the way I see it. I don't think all the good videos should be held onto just for one con, despite how well AMVs are handled there. True, it's a great place to see new material and a great way to get exposure, but I would have loved to have seen this quality of work from SO many people in the earlier eight months of the year ^^;; (not that there weren't some spectacular videos earlier this year, because there were... but the last two weeks have brought so much it makes my head explode!).

I think I just confused myself. Thoughts?

Mike, thanks for bringing it back on topic :) I was afraid I had derailed the thread before it even started

I don't particularly a year of slump. I've been attending contests since '98, and way back then, you were lucky to get one or two well-edited videos. Now, EVERY video is well-edited. The quality of the editing is hardly an issue any more 80% of the time. I think we're just so used to seeing universally decent videos nowadays, it's much less of a rollercoaster ride, and we're less enthused when a truly good video comes up. Or something.

I never did even consider it a year of slump. Who said that anyway? i've always felt that the AMV world gets more competitive every year and that means more creators and more great videos so there has been little to derail that. Sure there are bad cons and bad contests but I don't feel they harm the medium at all.

At Otakon I was thinking it was a year of slump ... then I realized how the average quality had risen so much and so had my expectations.

I think I personally am just getting "used" to AMVs and a little jaded, so it takes something really special to catch my attention. It's been harder for well edited "traditional" AMVs to excite me here lately.

However, AWA completely changed that. I saw a ton of creative, unique videos (such as Ian's Eva/Kare Kano, the Initial D vid, Vlad's and others,) as well as some really excellent "traditonially" edited videos (such as Hsein's Miazaki vid, Jason's "Do the Evolution," and one of my personal favorites - Darius Washington's Careless Whisper video from Pro) I'm excited about the medium as a whole again.

Even though I'm guilty of it, I can see how it can be damaging to hold all of the good vids for AWA. But I can understand it with AWA being at the pinnacle of what we do. I personally try to send videos to cons that I'll be attending. I also don't want to send my vids to cons that do a poor job of the AMV contest (such as AX or even Anime North after seeing how bad my video looked and sounded on their system (it was a fun con though and I'll return.))

So I guess I initially thought it was the year of slump, no I'm seeing it as a year of change and shifting trends. It'll be curious to see what happens next year.

I don't mean to "sandbag" for AWA or whatnot...but I think a big part of it is that so many contests have been run so poorly this year (Katsucon, AX, etc.) that people have been pretty demoralized..and AWA is always guaranteed to handle the contests well because of the dedicated VAT staff.

I've really only had videos for AWA these past two years. Reason being is that when I see deadlines for contests slip by, I get a little disappointed with myself, but life goes on. But when it comes to AWA -- I don't let it slide.
I've practically killed myself this year to get my videos done because it means so much to have videos for AWA.

I'd love to have videos in more contests spread throughout the year, but when I can only get around to making 2 videos in a year, there's no question as to where they're going :/
