Be warned: If you’ve seen any of my previous work and are expecting another stutter-style video, you may be disappointed. On the other hand if you’re looking for another dark gloomy video you’ve come to the right place :)
This video was kind of a reaction to the things people said about my last video (“Paradoxical sleep”) and the award it won at AWA (Best horror). One thing I never envisioned my last video to be, at all, was horror. So people continuously describing it as such kind of took me by surprise. This immediately got me thinking: “Well, why not make a true horror video this time to give the audience my take on how horror should look like?”.
As in most cases in my video editing “career”: Easier said then done. After cycling through various songs (Lightning bolt and Krzysztof Penderecki mostly), restarting my video several times, having several total black outs and struggling with convention contest deadlines I finally managed to create something that I’m actually quite satisfied with.
This video’s basic idea is to show Pierrot’s (From the Cowboy Bebop episode “Pierrot le fou”) fucked up life from a narrative perspective. The episode itself (yes I only used one episode for source footage, which is incredibly difficult/stupid) only shows him as a maniacal maniac until the end where they actually why he is what he is. I decided to flip the order around, first showing how he became what he is, then showing what the threat he exuberates and ultimately showing his inevitable demise. In doing so I think loyalists of the show should be able to get this video, whilst people who’ve never seen this show should be able to stick together the clues as well. Of course I wouldn’t be myself if I hadn’t executed it the way I have now. The order may seem totally random and it may seem to make no sense at all, but trust me, it does.
For this video I tried to achieve a very gloomy atmosphere. One of the tricks I used to do so was mucking up the video’s color and quality. The saturation is way down, whilst the contrast is way up. So if you notice any ugly video encoding: it was intentional. There are actually quite a lot of artifacts on the screen, but now you know why. My source footage looked excellent, trust me.
There are two people I need to thank for helping me make this video:
* Fluxmeister – For helping me with my source footage.
* Niotex - For actually making me finish the video after I’d given up on it.
As a closing note: This will most probably be my last AMV ever, I lack the time and inspiration and love for anime to make any new stuff. I won’t say I’ll never make anything ever again, but it’s highly probable so don’t count on any new stuff from me … ever again.
