Multi-Editor Project Part 1: Windows

Post by Pwolf » Wed Sep 14, 2005 3:02 am

Lets first start with the title. What do i mean by Multi-Editor Project? 1 person, many programs to edit with. can one decent editor make a decent video on a different editing program? I came up with this idea after making <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... lements. I thought it over and decided to make several videos using programs many other editors used. I started a thread in general amv to gather a programs list and came up with 6 programs. I will be releasing the videos as they are finished. the programs i picked will be kept seceret mostly because i might change which programs i use.

This video is the first video. I used Windows Movie Maker 2.0. After using WMM for the first time for an AMV i have come to the conclusion that it sucks and those of you who use it are limiting yourselfs :P upgrade if you can.

Major problems: crashes a lot. i'm using MakeAVIs with avisynth and it crashed a lot. Can't Export to anything other then WMV. i tired DV-AVI but it crashes. limited to 1 layer (at least from what i could figure out... it was very linier and only 1 layer).

The video itself is about a man who is dieing and is looking back on his life.

Enjoy the fruits of my labor and tourment -_-

Before I actually comment on your video...

Did you even watch the video you made? There was nothing wrong with it. Just because the program is simplistic, doesn't mean you'll put out bad videos with it. I think arigatomina would bite your head off if she read this.

Agreed on both of those points. You have to give the program a lot of "loading" time between actions. If you work slowly, it only crashes a minimal amount of times. Of course, "minimal" is somewhere in the ballpark of a dozen times in one video - usually many, many more. Previewing is best done simply by rendering a low quality version of the file. As for layers, I know the guides have something on that. It is possible, but it's not actually something the program itself can do.
Can't Export to anything other then WMV. i tired DV-AVI but it crashes.
Annoying, but I've learned to live with it. Also, DV-AVI did work for one of my videos, though the program crashed after it finished. You might just have wanted to give it a few extra attempts. You can never tell with that thing...

Anyway, my thoughts on your video:
- interesting concept. I like the idea of "life flashing before his eyes"...except...after he's dead... >_>
- quality was fine. I'm assuming you never actually saved this as a .wmv. If you did, however, and this is the converted file, then there's nothing wrong with it.
- "heartbeat" was downright irritating. I was about ready to stop the video when it seemed like the footage was going nowhere in the beginning. Once you got into it, however...
- editing was strong. The quiet, sad mood had its intended effect.

It was a good video, overall; the program isn't nearly as bad as you make it out to be, and your project proves that. Nice job.

Pff cheater, you should have left it as a .wmv file for full experimentation.

of course there is nothing wrong with it, its exactly as i pictured it. When i say WMM sucks try to remember this is coming from someone who has never used WMM to make an amv and has been using Premiere for 5 years. also, WMM crashes way more the premiere ever did for me. People complain about premiere crashing, but i think WMM is way more unstable. if i have "let it cool down" thats rediculous. i'm wasting time. Compaired to that, yea, it sucks. And when i say you should upgrade, i mean it. The program is great for simple editing, but you are limited to the linier timeline. you can't go back and change anything without having to re time everything after that. If Ari wants to bite my head off then so be it, but lets see what she thinks about it after using premiere for 5 years and never using WMM.

I spent about 2 hours on my first day of editing trying to figure how i can export it and still keep the video/audio sync if i imported the WMV into avisynth. I ended up having to create a new profile using the ISO Mpeg4 settings. i set the bit rate to max and that fixed that problem.

by the time i finished the final encode i watched it and relized then that it takes a looong time for the music to pick up. i didn't notice it before (probably due to dealing with WMM crashes and other problems). but i still think its what i wanted.

more like the oposite >.> my project doesn't prove anything except that a decent editor (myself) can make a decent video on a crappy (inferior?) program he's never used before. :P As long as you can figure how to use the program, the rest is up to the editor, assuming the program your using can do what you want. WMM did that, but i had to go around my ass to get to my elbow to do it.

Thanks for the comments :P

now, if you really want a wmv file i'll make one just for you ;)
