Wow. Two videos in two days...that's a personal note actually. What I mean is, I've seen two videos to games that don't get much attention within two days. That's very refreshing.
Anyway, I'm a huge Silent Hill fan, so I've been waiting for some more good videos to be released from that series. You just answered that wish. So...
Stuff I Liked
- the editing style. Your timing was right on, and even the little beats got a light accent to them with an effect somehow.
- the resolution. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal to most people, but I'm getting really sick of ginormous resolutions that go clear off of my screen. The size you used is absolutely perfect. That's what I like to see.
Stuff I Was Iffy About
- the song. I could see why you picked it. It did have a mysterious feel to it that lends itself to Silent Hill 2. Still, it was almost a little too upbeat for the game. Either way, you handled it well, so I'm not that bothered.
- the horizontal flip effect. You used that several times throughout the video, and I just didn't care for it. To me, that says "hey, I ran out of footage, so this is how I improvised - by repeating it backwards." It's a personal preference, really.
- the hue changes. Like Icy said, it just seemed out of place. Maybe it was because of the colors you chose. They were brighter than the rest of the video, and that may be what threw it off.
Stuff I Didn't Like
- the less-than-original footage. Besides a few scenes that I know are from certain parts of the game, your video looked a lot like the opening remixed. Granted, it was a good remix, but a remix nonetheless. So, my point is this: I wish that the cutscenes weren't the only thing you had used. I love the story of that game, but most of that story only comes out during the ingame scenes. So, nice editing, but I wish that the scenes hadn't been quite so generic.
I do have one question about an effect you used (which I liked, by the way.) At about 0:46, you went into the section with James in front of the mirror, staring at his own reflection. For a brief moment, you used an effect where you blurred each face, one after the other. Now, either that was an insane coincidence to what I'm thinking of, or you planned it really well. In scenes - and especially promo videos - from SH2 (and the third game, if I remember correctly), they often blurred and distorted the faces of monsters, to add to the dark surrealism of the game. In that brief moment of your video, you did the EXACT same thing to James and his reflection. It was almost creepy. But cool. So, I have to ask. What that planned, or a brilliant coincidence? Either way, I thought it was cool and really added to the feel of your video.
So, uh...long post. Longer than I intended, but worth every word, I think. Overall, nicely done and I hope you'll think of doing more Silent Hill videos! I would kill for some good 3 and 4 videos.
As always, Farewell, Good Luck, and Happy AMV-ing!
