Can't seem to download AVIs
Hey guys, I wasn't sure which thread to direct this in as it is both a software (well, OS problem) and a video problem technically.
I've lost the ability to download AVI files. I can view them fine but I can't download them.
Whenever I click on a direct download my computer just sits there and never opens anything. This is also true for wmv files but not mpegs, quicktime or real media. I can however, if I open up windows media player, tell it the URL of the file and watch but I can't save it anywhere.
I would think that this problem could be solved with right-click "save target as" but I can't do that anymore. no matter what site I'm on if I rightclick a video url the "save target as" option is greyed out and I can't select it.
Does anybody have an inkling as to what is wrong so I can rectify it? It doesn't APPEAR to be anything in the IE options but I might have overlooked it.

A little searching pulled out this Microsoft Article:

Does it work?

Thanks. That solved half my problem but I can now live if the other isn't resolved. I can now save target as again but this still leaves the oddity that clicking on an avi or wmv file keeps trying to open it in WMV in IE rather than giving me the option to download them.AMVfreak wrote:A little searching pulled out this Microsoft Article:

In IE go to Options -> Programs
Click 'manage addons'
Disable the window media player plugins.
OR better idea. Get a better browser. I'm not sure what problems you have had with Firefox but it is the best out of the browsers I've used so far. If you don't want Firefox get Opera... or something.... just don't use IE. : /

Tools/internet Options/Advanced tab
Scroll down to the Multimedia section and make sure "Don't display online media content in the media bar" is checked.
I was a diehard IE guy for years upon years...and even I'm sorta half-switched to Firefox.

In most case, Windows media player and winamp are set as default players so when you click on a file to play, one of them will pop open to play said file...One thing to do is right click on the file you want to play and then select "open with" then choose the player of your choice and on this screen you can choose your default player as well. Hope this helps you out and more added advice.....Firefox is a definite improvement over IE. It's my main browser and used about 90% of the time.

oh hell someone needs to say this.
You sure you have every windows update for ie? How about downloading ie6 and reinstalling it.
Also Opera/Firefox Mozilla are better browsers but if you arent interested you can always stab yourself in the eye with something sharp each time you wish to download an avi. Just a thought.
