As for the topic concern, I find FF7- Aerith's Theme
quite melodic that can possibly hold a sad tone if executed right.
Of course, this is coming from a Final Fantasy fan boy.

I'd suggest maybe a Radiohead tune. Some Radiohead songs sound very melocholy. Hmmmm.. Like "Exit Music (for a film)" or thier re-make of "Wish You Were Here".
