I never ever 'preplan', so it's always linear for me. But sometimes, I'll go to a spot in the song and stick whatever I had in mind there, instead of waiting until I get there.
I always hate doing it that way though, it's not until halfway throughout the video that I realize it's crap.

the actual editing for me is linear for the most part. i will get ideas in my head out of place but i try not to edit those parts until i actually get there. usually by that time i have went through a couple of versions of how to do that part. as far as effects i am doing them as i go. seeing that my knowledge is limited and that i don't want super effects videos i don't have to worry too much about it.

I toss together the first scene that comes to mind for the video. Whichever other scenes I can think of get put in place next. The rest is basically a hunt to find clips to fill out the rest of the song. That and a whole lot of instinct. :)

I plan my video out pretty extensivly but I try to leave a little leeway so it can evolve as it goes on. Then I edit in a very linear fashion, one clip/section at a time.

For me editing is like reading a book, you go though from one end to the other, and the song dictates the visuals, not me.

I also do some sections very quickly and others very slowly. The best ten seconds of video I have ever done took me literally a minute or two in a video that took me over a month to finish.

well generally i have an idea in mind and bits of the video kind of planned out but i tend to edit linearly (is that a word?), but then when i get to the parts i had planned i tend to forget my plans and do something completely different.....
.........and altogether better

as with rendering it's a long and painful process that always goes wrong the first few times.....

Depends. If I'm creating the video while I'm editing I jump all around the timeline as ideas grab me. At the end if I have any empty spots I sit down and linearly figure out a decent way to tie together all the various differnt bits.

OTOH if it's an idea that I've given lots of thought to I've essentially created the video in my head already so there's no need to jump all around as ideas grab me. Instead I just do linear editing since all I'm really doing is just putting into the computer something I've already completed in my head.

same here
I usually dont have the whole video ready to be made in my head. I start from ideas that first come and then fill in the gaps.
When I'm not lazy, I plan out the whole video and edit from start to finish/

I do most of my editing in a linear fashion. I've usually got certain scenes in mind for some of the sections of the music, but I find it helpful to have the previous sections done beforehand, so that transitions and the timeframe can be handled better. As for effects, I usually insert them right as I'm editing, rather than afterwards (although if I'm not sure if I like the particular effect, I'll export a version of the video without it first so that I can compare them).
