Avi size problem and Pinnacle Problem.

Post by RECONstiPated » Thu Jun 24, 2004 8:32 am

----------------------------2 problems---------------------------------------
1. I just finished my Last amv on wmm cause I wanted to give it one last go. And I encoded it to DV AVI and it ended up to be 296 megs for about 1:30 min worth of video does anyone know where I can get any such thing to downsize the file?
2.I got Digital video for Dummies and It came with a Special disk with A Trial Version of of Pinnacle and I installed it and it made both my CD drive and MY CD-R/RW drive inactive. I uninstalled it (Pinnacle) then it worked again. WTH! How do you install it without rendering both of your cd drives inactive?

He told you 2 codecs you can use the compress it, gave you two guides on how to use those codecs in the two programs he provided and the Eurovan is just godly.

An .avi is an uncompressed video file. You can just insert the .avi into almost any video editor. Then save it as an mpeg file. This will create a video file that is smaller. True, not as well compressed as if you use xvid or other proprietary codecs, but it's very simple to do. The Pinnacle you have should be able to do that. (No idea why it's disabling your CD drives.)

NOT TRUE! Well, not ALWAYS true. A .avi CAN be uncompressed, but a DV avi, for instance, which is what RECONstiPated was talking about, is compressed, just not very small.

Heh, more like it's a thick burger being sat on by an elephant - the contents are still there but beware of how smushed it'll be if it's a really fat elephant sitting on it.

And before you hit the problem - you can't convert DV AVI files with VirtualDub - you can't open them. You need to make an avisynth script in order to open those files in Vdub, and I take it you don't know anything about avisynth. Your options? You can read that guide Scintilla linked you to, install avisynth and write your script telling VirtualDub to use the DirectShow filter to open the file. Or, you can use something else. Last I checked, TMPGEnc won't open DV AVI files, either.

Try doing a google search for WinMPG Convert - if you're vid is short (under 5 mins) it'll compress it without it looking too bad. That's if you're in a hurry and never planning to use DV AVI ever again (most other editing programs let you save the video as huffyuv, and that's the best way to do it). If you *do* plan to use DV AVI again, then learn how to make an avisynth script (from that guide) and convert the files to huffyuv, *then* compress them to xvid (with VirtualDub) or mpg (TMPGEnc).

The alternative to using DirectShow mode is to convert the DV to the other type (I forget if it's 1 or 2 right now) with a free converter you can find online.

Then, by installing a Video for Windows DV codev like Canopus or Panasonic you can put the file into vdub.

I'm not sure what the best VfW codec is, though, as I haven't compared them.
