interludes
ah yeah, barely jack to talk about the few seconds of usualy animated footage that come up half way through alot of anime. actualy i think they suck as they basicaly tell you "your half way through watching this eppisode", which well, kinda ruins the atmosphere and imersion a bit. oh and, the bogiepop phantom interlude is realy anoying (an anoying nigle in an otherwise amazing anime )

The eyecatches are there to mark the beginning and end of the commercial break when they're broadcast. Sometimes they're annoying (Boogiepop), sometimes they're funny (Marmalade Boy), sometimes they're just there (Rayearth 2).
I usually don't mind them, and usually like seeing what the animators come up with to deliberately grab your attention when you're coming back from commercials.

Cowboy Bebop did it quite well, imo. However, not all animes have a clever little theme song or screen, etc. Rurouni Kenshin and a few others just fade to black and then fade back in. Its simple and doesn't really kill the mood too much due to the fact theirs no annoying music to interfere with the theme that was already established.

I love the one on YYH, it's just not that often that you get to see those characters chibi-fied but still cool. ^_^; I don't get tired of that interlude no matter how many eps I watch in a row.
The only bad thing I can think of is that it's cute, and that gets 'unwanted' in some of the angstier, more serious episodes. Still, it does break the tension, so maybe that's a good thing.

Some of the later Slayers ones are very neat. Eyecatches are just an essential corporate part of some series.
It is annoying when they do recaps after the mid-ep break, clearly just to lower costs and whatnot. I mean, even with an ad break in between the two halves of an ep, we're not that stupid

Some of them are funny, others get redundant after a while.
I like the breaks for Boys over Flowers for example, and one's that change regularly...though I don't really like Azumanga's breaks ^^;;, it was cute the first time, but moving on...
I also like all the snap shots too, *or whatever they're called* like the one's in Fruits Basket for example.
