Reaaaaaaaally. *goes to download pen-pen's AMVs* 8)

I like a good brainless-fun video if its energy is good, but I seem to like making plot-driven vids most. (Good thing, too, because I suck at effects.) And they tend to veer off the original story so that the narrative arc of the AMV goes the way I want it to - had to change around one so that there was more closure, etc.

Anyway, a few things - first, "story-driven" to me would make a terrible category. Because a good story will evoke more than "oh, so it's a story." It will be emotional or fun, or something else - it's not a means in and of itself. Most plot-driven AMVs would fall under drama, many under romance. So for that reason I wouldn't think they are a type unto themselves. More of a style, or a flavor of a preexisting genre.

Second, insert standard babble about how effects and story are not mutually exclusive nor mutually inclusive.

But anyway, yes, because I like narratives - I write first and edit second (...or third, depending on my mood) - I tend to like videos with an arc to them. You'd be surprised how this can happen; things that are stuffed end to end with effects can have a narrative arc that you may not even realize.

Eh... well, my What Romance Entails (in my sig) aims to tell a story aside from the anime, and I think it was successful. But wait for someone else to back that up before you get it. ^_^;;

Almost all of my videos tell a story based on my life experiences, instead of the anime they come from.

Wow, I didn't expect to get so many responses. :) The comments are all excellent, and I plan to download all the ones mentioned.

I haven't made a music video yet (although I've done quite a bit of editing work, for job applications and such) but I hope to make my first shortly...assuming I get time.

Sorry bout that, but since I'm posting again I'd like to point out Shellshock as a good example of a instrumental vid that tells a story.
Wow I am just incompetent today. I meant Prelude to War. In my defense they both use older Gundam series.
Ummm...SEED is pretty far from being older...Hell, it came out in '02 and finished last year, it's the most recent Gundam series of them all (barring the infamous SD Gundam force)

and 08th isn't exactly older either...you want older Gundam series in an AMV, look up 'Credit Is Due'

Sorry...had to get that off my chest...anyways

On the subject of storytelling:
Haven't done it (not intentionally anyways) yet...been meaning to at some point, just a matter of getting the right idea...

Yes, there still are authors that make story-based AMVs. I'm one of them, though not all my AMVs tell a story. "Matantei Poirot Ragnarök", "Sweet Feather" and "Over the Sky" has new storyline other than the anime used in those. Also "the Little While that We Are Here" and "White Rabbit" has something more in them than just images put together with the music. "Take a Look Around" is quite close to a retelling the OVA story.
