AvC Round 2: Action

Post by Warheart » Fri May 16, 2008 10:18 am

The second videos of the Alex vs. Cal [Warheart vs. <strike>Prodigi</strike> <b>Deaf Jester</b>] Iron Chef. Each editor selected a song for the other and the 24 hours of editing commenced.

Prepare to be thoroughly assaulted.

The poster is actually split, so the top half will direct you to mine, and the bottom to Jests. (he makes awesome posters ...)

The winner will be decided by YOU the viewer. Everyone who posts in the thread can respond to each video individually in their post (Please do, so we know what you did and didn't like) and also has the chance to say at the end of their post which they choose as their favorite.

Essentially there will be 6 videos in the end for the 3 categories we've decided on: Action, Drama, and 'Epic'. This is the ACTION round.

The videos of the first round which had the theme 'Epic' can be found here and here.
The old announcement thread can be found here in case someone wants to read it.

Hehehe I saw WH's vid already. I grab DJ's vid now....edit after I sleep. XD

Edit:
Both were very nice

Warheart: Loved the sync. The Multi-layering bugged me just a few times but most of the time it looked great. I've seen tek before...you took advantage of the scenes nicely lol.

Defigi: The beginning was hardcore XD But the vid as a whole clicked "off" and on" for me to much :( It really had some great moments though 1:08-1:20 and 1:36-end

I vote WH this time PATHFINDER (might watch both again when I wake up)

Oral Intercourse during editing is very encouraging

Too much information. Dude, no, seriously.

Pathfinder:
Beginning from 0:00 to around 0:22 was pretty promising, however that whole 'echoing' effect on the top and bottom picture is pretty overused and did seem cheesy after the first 5 seconds. Also the screen/overlays to put more motion into the footage didn't help that much either since I've seen it too many times now. The dark ambient/artsy part 'till around 01:06 is awesome. However right after that the whole echoing comes back in and it all just seems a bit random again. The second dark ambient part is also pretty cool, especially with the b/w color segment. The ending felt a bit rushed and the fade to the credits screen seems too fast. The lip flap also still makes me feel awkward, I know for Tekkon you can't really avoid it but still...anyways, enjoyable video, but not one of my favs. Probably just because of the song cause I'm a subjective bastard.

Crysis:
Very nice internal synch, very nice song choice (doesn't mean I like the band too much though). The scene selection throughout the entire video felt great for the action itself but it was generally lacking in variety. I don't know how much of the actual movie you used since I haven't seen it but it still feels weird to be watching the first Shinji fight for over 1minute...The effect-synch at 0:33 is very atmospheric somehow and I really love it. At first I thought that the editing style might get too monotone, but you always seemed to be able to pull out those real emotional scenaries at the exactly right moment (01:40 for example) so I didn't feel bored at all. Very fluent and climatic ending as well.

So yeah my vote definately goes to Crysis on this one.

Pathfinder:
Good sync, nice shakes and I liked most of the effects you used here. There was a lot of overlaying going on, some of it looked a bit weird to me, but overall it did add some motion to the longer clips, which I liked. A few scene choices seemed a little random though. Anyway, nice vid, I thought you followed the pace of the song very well.

Crysis:
Lots of explosions. :P Nice editing with some hard cuts and cool strobes... fits the song. The edits were pretty much consistent and solid altogether, a bit repetitive after a while, but it's a very short video anyway. At some points I couldn't really see what was going on, but whatever.
Overall, I enjoyed both, but I thought the action sync was kinda more kickass in this one and since this is the action round, I vote for Crysis.

Awesome banners btw.

*getting based on recommendations*

Pathfinder: I really liked the essence of flow and intermingling of layers and textures, it all seemed quite suited to the song. To me the highest scoring part of this video is definitely it's style. And yet there were still moments where I was unsure of what was in sync and what was not.

Crysis: I found it very difficult to be objective with this one, mainly because i was like "omg omg Rebuild!!!". Regardless, it was a certainly maximum impact video that really pounded all the right sync opportunities.

Great efforts from both of you, equally enjoyable pieces. However if I have to chose one as my favourite then it would have to be Crysis

Ok
Pathfinder:
Was not bad it has a good flow, but it looked really randrom an strange for me. Sometimes i thought there fits some scenes not or it were the "effects".

Crysis:
I like this video really much, for me it fits really good. The video is also strange but for me here in a good way. Nice use of "effects" and good cuts to the fast video.

For me Crysis wins.
