  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

Fantasy in D Major (Another Final Fantasy AMV)

Post by lucincia » Fri Aug 17, 2007 11:49 am

Hi there -

My first attempt at AMV. Submitted it to Anime Iowa 2007. Would like some "pro" feedback :)

Major thing I know I should fix - Standardize aspect ratio.

Thank you for any constructive input!

Number one, I would host this locally, and many people would download it more.

Number two, you should send a link to your video's page, instead of your profile.

Number three. Uh. I'll view when I get home.

Fixed link

Thanks - fixed the link and now it points to the video profile page, and not the user profile page.

Uhm, please, upload the video on LOCAL instead of a direct link to you-tube. Here is how you do that.

Sorry - File There Now

Post by lucincia » Fri Aug 17, 2007 8:44 pm

Sorry - I thought I uploaded the file, but I guess I missed some steps.

The file should be there now. It's an MP4, so hopefully it's okay.

I know I still have a lot to learn - aspect ratios, compression, etc. Have to start somewhere :)

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Hmm... I promised I'd watch, and I did. So here goes...

On a technical level, this really needs a lot of work. I'm not sure which (if any) of the guides you read on this site, so just to be thorough, I'm gonna link everything relevant to a VGMV.

Various PS and PS2 ripping guides. If you can't find a particular part that a guide mentions, I've found that it's pretty easy to just Google what you need. The one that's listed as the FFX-2 ripping guide is actually a generic guide that works for most PS2 games that do NOT use the ingame engine in their cutscenes.

The links in this thread cover everything you need to know about ripping DVDs, cleaning up your footage (though be careful how you clean videogames... it takes a slightly different touch than with anime), fixing those aspect ratios and the resolution, exporting, and compressing your video (although doing h.264/.mp4 is a major step in a good direction, so bravo on that).

If you're looking for other guides regarding other various technical and/or creative stuff, check the How To section or Search the forums. You'll find lots of useful stuff for VGMVs. I know I did. ;p

Now, I know I'm spending a lot of time on the technical stuff, but that's because I really enjoyed this video, and I think it could be a lot better with that stuff fixed up. About the editing... you definitely had good beat sync, and I appreciate the dynamic differences in your clips. You matched the intensity (or lack thereof) of the song at all the right parts, and that was neat. The only thing I didn't see was much of a story, but I feel like this video was more of a celebration of the series anyway than any attempt at a deep plot.

The point is that it's fun and it was good. If this is your first attempt, then I can't wait to see what you edit when you've gotten more practice (and technical knowledge) under your belt. As a fellow VG editor, this gets my seal of approval. ^_^

Thanks, Jen, for the input. I know my technical skills is severely lacking. I browsed through some guides on here, but mostly Googling, but mostly just how to grab the videos off the game CDs and did not pay much attention to "quality". I wanted to jump right into the editing part! Now that I can step back and start learning the technical skills.

As for storyline, there is a weak storyline there - wedding crashers. It's vague to see, I can agree to that. But some people can spot it after viewing it couple times.

It's just so much harder to use video game clips than straight anime. Options are very limited with games. Would be interesting to do couple AMVs with animes. Boy, that would be a joy - hours of videos to scrub through!

Thanks again :)
