Post by Bakadeshi » Sat Aug 20, 2005 10:20 pm

Since I can post this from my hotel room, yay for wireless internet, heres my romance entry for Otakon. I made it to defeat Chang in romance, but we both got murdered by a sailormoon vid in the end. that probably should have been in comedy. awell.

without further adue, The little things, a chii and hideki romance video to chobits.

"The little things" manages to provide little in originality but it is a rather accurate description of my interest in it before and after viewing.

Bakadeshi + Chobits = !download! So, here's my breakdown on it...

Stuff I Liked
- the concept. Mainly, what I wanted to address with this is that I like how the video wasn't too serious. You worked in the comedic points of the anime without making them seem out of place. There was a scene or two that I didn't think fit quite right, but it was all right for the most part.
- resolution and quality. Nicely done.
- song choice. What made me like your video the most was that it was a romance halfbreed - meaning, you frequently portrayed it as if Hideki and Chi were having memories of each other, rather than a direct "happening-at-that-moment" sort of romance. The song worked well for this, since it was directed more at memories of love. Get my drift? I hope so, because I had a difficult time wording that.
- the last minute or so. A repeating instrumental riff can be tough to work with, but you kept the flow of the video going. I especially liked the picture frames. Does that actually come from Chobits? The frames, I mean. I don't think the pictures inside them exist - unless they're in the final recap episode that I never bothered watching.
- improvised rain. Just thought you'd like to know that I enjoyed that little detail at the beginning.

Stuff I Was Iffy About
- scene speed. I've seen Chobits several times now, both in fansubs and when I bought the DVDs, so I notice it when a scene is sped up or slowed down. For a few of the ones, it was okay, since the scene was slow enough that the increase in speed didn't matter that much. Others, though, it made an impact on my viewing. For example, when you showed Chi in the water with the dolphins, boy, were those dolphins swimming fast! There were a few other points, but that was the one I just noticed when I was watching the video again.
- lack of chronological order. I understand why this video wouldn't necessarily need as much of that ordering (the "memory" POV), and do commend you on not really showing major events out of order, but it distracted me a little.

Stuff I Didn't Like
- blur effect. You did a lot of blurring, particularly in the beginning, and, like any effect, it gets hard on the eyes the more you use it. Normally, I don't mind blurring, but it happened so much that as I watched the video several times through, I had to stop between viewings to clear my vision.
- the sappiness. It was romantic and sentimental, but...it was sappy. I do have to give you a hand for making this more dramatic than most romance videos, but the cheesiness always underlies that.

Overall, I enjoyed this video. It's certainly one of the better Chobits videos, and likely one of the best Chi/Hideki tributes. I'd give it a 4.5/5 star rating if I could. If I find the time, I might drop this a full opinion, though you'll probably see many of the same things I listed here. However, there are more specific things that I leave out of a breakdown like this.

This will certainly go on my list of great videos, and I may even switch out a Chobits video on my hard drive in favor of this one. Awesome job! ^_^

Wow, nice video here. I agree with dj ultima about the scene speed in a few places... a couple scenes just seemed sped up too much. That's my only nitpick though, I loved everything else you did with this.
