Music genre in AMV info

Post by r][k » Wed Dec 01, 2004 8:07 pm

Hi,
I guess this may be my first post here, and it's to make a suggestion:

I (and I hope I'm not the only one) don't know much about a lot of songs, so when I see the result list of AMV's I'd like to see also the genre of the music used in that AMV, so I can choose wisely ;)

That's it, thanks in advance.

That would be helpful, but I feel that is something the person who wants to download that particular AMV to find out on their own. A little internet research can get you really far.

Also, this should be in Site Suggestions, not AMV Suggestions.

There were several of the same suggestions made in the past.

Exactly why Phade didn't seem to like the idea.

Phade wrote:Hey,

The problem with that is creating the categories and then categorizing the music. There are many wide opinions on what is what.

Phade.
I personally don't find it a very good idea, due to the categorization problem.

I gave my reasoning before on this topic.

Not quoting verbatim:

One of my favorite bands is "Man or Astro-Man?". Now, the only 'standard' genre they really would fit in is "Experimental Rock" but that's a really broad field. And even from song to song MoAM? breaks the 'rock' barrier and goes almost into total electronic music. I call 'em "Electronic Surf Rock."

Should I get my own genre just for them? Should I be left with "Experimental Rock" or (horror) just "Rock"? Because if you downloaded an AMV with MoAM? music and expected to be rocked hard, well, you'd be in for a bit of a shock. :o

As much as I would love to search for trip-hop videos (sigh...), one look at the Music Forum and all the bitchfighting that goes on in there about what Is or Is Not True Metal (tm) will show you one good reason not to do this.

Also, the fact that it's based so much on opinion could lead to the database getting very messy. You'd have people categorizing the same artist 18 different ways.

My suggestion, if you don't mind taking a few extra seconds, is looking up the musical artist of the video on something like Amazon or ... oh, whatever references are out there these days. Hell, Google them. You'll have at least some information about what sort of music they do in a few seconds.

This would be a pain to do. Deciding what genres things are can be annoying, and we'd have do it for over 22,000 entries.

About the only genre of music broad enough that it wouldn't cause arguments would be 'audible music'. And given various degrees of deafness even that would be debatable. Instead of classifying the music why don't you just take a guess from the AMV type/description. After all, it's rather doubtful a dance video is going to be using a slow depressing country song. Although, given the personality of some people here, just by mentioning that I've probably guaranteed there will be one in a month or so.

I would like the idea, seeing as I am often in the mood for a certain type of music or would like to see similar songs in a different video.

Maybe if there were something like 5 or so main genres (rock, pop, rap, country, classical just as examples I know there are more.) and then another little place to write the genre within the genre :¬ \
