Your going to be really hard pressed to find anything that would do well in that field for 500 dollars. Video editing is pretty demanding resource wise on a computer. I would suggest at least a 2.4 Ghz processor. Intel or AMD, whichever you want, and 256 MB of RAM minimum. I would suggest 512 MB of, but 1 GB of RAM would be better. Video and sound are your choice. Then you have to consider the monitor and the speakers. Do you have any of the parts already? If so that would be a big help. But, getting to the point, I suggest this site:

http://www.pricewatch.com

It's a directory for computer parts. If you know what your looking for this makes it that much easier. You can also search by price and keep it below 500 dollars. Good luck doing it though.

I find eMachines to be amazingly cheap compared to their computer features.

If you're fairly compotent in simple computer repair, I'd recommend buying a refurbished computer to save money. I bought a refurbed Gateway from Tiger Direct and I've never had a problem. IMO refurbished PCs are more reliable since a technician actually had to turn it on to fix it. Normal production rates are so high the manufacturers rarely bother booting up the computer to see if it works.

Gateway and Dell have fairly good refurbished selections with great prices. I think you could easily get a good editing computer for less than $500. Computer Geeks also has good prices, but not wide selection.

Get a Pentium or AMD. Stay away from Celerons for video editing.

If you or someone you know are comfortable enough with building computers, have a gander at this parts list provided by the AMV pannel at Anime Boston 2004

Little update:
I found a cheaper and very similar model of the eMachines computer link I gave you earlier
Hopefully this post wasnt too late if you were considering to buy eMacs.

Looks like I've been shown up.
You know how eMachines are with their prices. =D
Its pretty hard finding ready-to-go computers with good features and a price other than Emachines anyways.
Although if you want any specifics that ready-to-go computers dont have, buying parts and building it yourself is a good solution to work out like Brolly said.

I just prefer, and suggest, to build your own. Then it is easier to upgrade whatever you want because you know what's compatable because you built the thing. That and if I screw something up I want it to be my fault.
