  • Comments: Although she doesn't know it, this video was heavily inspired by katranat's extremely intuitive style of editing, where she's somehow able to weave together these scenes that are completely unrelated to one another on first glance, but which still manage to feel completely correct in the context of the whole, and can even impart a kind of narrative cadence, even if there is no clear story being told. Her videos which do this are emotionally potent things that just absolutely envelop me. I've tried to describe this phenomenon many times in the past with her work and I don't know that I've ever succeeded, really, in capturing what it is that I love about it so much. When I asked kat how she does this, she replied that she really just tries to focus on character relationships in her videos, a vision statement that seems really obvious when you read it but provided the framework I was missing in trying to tease out how to replicate this approach myself.

I also want to call out PieandBeer's video Ennui, released in 2022. This is an AMV that over the past couple years has become a minor obsession of mine, and now ranks among my favorite AMVs ever. It does a lot of the same kinds of things that kat's videos do, and is something I've studied and tried to learn from because it just absolutely floors me every time I watch it with how well all the seemingly random chaos that happens onscreen just makes this deep-set sense that defies all my attempts to analyze it objectively.

Something Good In Me is the result of these two major influences (and probably a smattering of others that have seeped into my subconscious and which I'm not able to specifically identify at the time I'm writing these words). I have not watched Kiznaiver (a running theme that you should probably get used to on this channel moving forward!), but the aesthetic of the show seemed to fit what I was going for. When I read the summary, some of the lyrics of this song seemed like they would be a good fit, too. The rest is just kind of a collection of guesses and attempts at matching the elusive feelings that this song elicits in me. If you observe a narrative, it's coincidence, although there are arcs of...theme that run through the video, I guess. I entered this video in the 2024 AWA Accolades contest, and several participants complained (or maybe just commented?) that they had no idea what the video was about. I'm happy I succeeded!

    Technical notes:
Edited in Magix Vegas 15.0. Total editing time was ~15 hours (I'm guessing, as usual!).
