heh...modified reviews
2004-06-23 00:23:52
I figure if the top 10 is comparing vids to an '8' average, then I should do the same. After all, if the best videos on this site are judged according to 8 as the 'average' for an 'okay' video, then where do I get off trying to use 5 for an average? Obviously the average is much higher or our best videos wouldn't be compared to such a high average.
I'm only about 1/3 the way through my reviews (about 250 edited so far), but I'll get them all eventually. If anyone wants me to change the scores back, I'll do so - but keep in mind it puts the video far lower than the 'average' according to the top 10 scale.
/Sarah - I'll change yours back.
I didn't mean to worry anyone, it's just my way of 'standardizing' my reviews to fit the new 'average'. I figure I'm scoring 3 under the top 10 average (of 8 or more for each category). I simply can't bring myself to add 3 points to every score, so I'm upping them 2 and calling it close enough. The 'true' scores are still there, so at least that's one thing I have over the new top 10 system. ;p The reviews haven't been changed, I'm just adjusting the 'physical score' to fit the high average of all videos on the site. It's actually fun. ^___^
Who knew one review made such a difference to the top 10 list? I'm actually seeing motion again, at least for the videos with under 20 ops. I *knew* my scoring 3 points under the average was hurting videos, now I know I can fix that. I'm so glad DW explained to me how good it is to compare videos to the '8 = average' of the new top 10 rather than that old '5 = average' system. It's given me a grand total of 200 straight 10 reviews (not counting 'reviewable' of course). And I'm no where near the bottom of my list. ^"^

updates
2004-06-12 01:36:28
The new vid jumped up a bit, surprising since it's usually the other way around, but no matter. YYH fans should read the description before watching, but it's recommended for bishonen lovers. Finally I got a chance to highlight other 'pairings' along with my fave for the anime. ^.^
On a related note, I've put 'In Love' back online. The song is six minutes, so I couldn't cut the size down too much, but it's better than the old 80mb version. I'll try doing a simple remaster of the original as well, but it'll be a while. I just don't like not having that one available since it's my favorite shonen ai video (that I've made), and the strongest concept from my original set of pre-org videos. I've also replaced one of my old ynm vids - descendents of darkness for the dub. It's no more complicated than the original, just cleaner and better compressed. I really made a mess of those huge files back before I figured out how to use Showbiz as a converter rather than a compressor.
So that makes a grand total of 4 'remake/masters'. Pretty sad when I think about it. The remake for my old 'Not Alone' was entirely revamped - hence the separate listing as 'I'll Wait for You' - but it was still based on the basic framework of the original. My 'Nature's Child' is a remaster, just spruced up and very nicely compressed (compared to the original) - but that one was a pwp fun/action vid, all it needed was to cut the fuzz and spare frames, and fix that screwy resolution size. >.< Falling in Love is about the same - only it's slow and simple, but oh-so-pretty. ^__^ I love that song, and the vid makes me remember how much I like the anime. I still haven't written anything for them, but I think I will now. This last one, 'In Love' is probably my favorite, but then again, I loved the original video, even though the resolution was a constant 160x120 - meaning instead of stretching at fullscreen it just filled the space with black. Despite that, the song does the work. I love that song. ^_^
No, aside from my new vid I'm just focused on getting cleaner (preferably small) versions of my old faves back up. It would be much quicker if I didn't have to start from scratch - that's what I get for using wmm instead of editing directly from the vobs in Premiere. Blegh. I'm writing a lot more these days, so it's a fair trade off. I only have 9 more vids (10 if you include vid number nine), so there's no rush on the new stuff. I have plenty on my plate just trying to remaster the old ones without throwing the timing off. It's like writing a story. If I lose a story and try to rewrite what I had, it's going to be different. With vids, I have the originals but it's really hard to tell what I was timing to when the footage in some is so small I can barely see the cuts. ;p
Heh, the splendor of being an excited noob. All the imagination at its peak and no skills to bring it out. Now I got the skills (mediocre as some might think, they do suffice to meet my needs) and lack the imagination. I just hold onto knowing there were less than 100 yyh vids listed when I joined, about 20 available for download, none for the pairings I featured, none for the songs I used, and only one available Hiei-centric video (none for Kurama). Heck, I made the first YYH/LP video. That probably shouldn't be anything to brag about, but I'll always think of this as my anime. I still remember the first time I announced a video on the forum - right after the carrot came online. I put up my first 'set' of yyh vids and the comment I got? "Wow, more YYH vids than you can shake a stick at." Looking back, I'm just glad the person hadn't donated enough to download them at the time. ^_^;; Poor little videos. If only I knew then what I know now...I would have never have shared them here. I'm glad I didn't know any better.

Pioneer or the animators?
2004-05-23 00:29:10
I think Sailormoon has to be the worst anime I have worked with to date. It's worse than fansubs or bootlegs when it comes to errors on screen (watching on television), and trying to rip it with 'dvd' quality is hopeless. It *looks* like vhs. And forget using inverse telecine and getting it nice looking, it's one of those mixed bags. I hate that. It doesn't have those screwy interlaced issues that YYH has, but the overall 'fuzz' is just nasty. I can see it on my television, so I knew it would be even worse on the computer, and it is. I just can't see how any company would accept such poor quality dvds. If I can run a light smooth filter and make it look a lot better, why didn't they? That's assuming this is a problem with the original animators. I have noticed that SM has very little actual animation. Mostly it's pans, and then the repeated 'transformation' scenes, plus lip movements but anyone who's done lip sync knows how easy that is - doesn't require new frames half the time.
I don't know. Earthian is an older anime, and the US release of that made it look pretty shabby - poor animation, poor encoding. But Sailormoon is much worse. It's very sad when an official dvd is worse than the illegal ones. What's the point of buying it if the quality takes a nose dive? Blegh. I hate wasting money.

Eh, I'm about half through the vid I'm working on, but I don't really feel like finishing it. I think I won't. ^_^;; I know what I want to do with the rest, and I'm sure I could get it done this weekend. I just really don't feel like actually finishing it - no excitement to see it done. I'll probably just keep what I have so far and clip the audio - I can always do the second half some other time. But I doubt I will. It'll be just another of my unfinished vids. ;p
I really really want to do something with my games. I had to give ff9 back, but I can rent ps games and rip the footage easily. I think I just might do that. We'll see. ^__^
