The Future...

I've been thinking lately about what the org would look like in 2010, and whether AMVs truly have the depth required to be called art. I mean, movies have been released for a hundred years, yet new concepts are found every year, and that is because the movies talk about life. AMVs? They mostly don't tell stories, or evoke real themes.
However, I've seen some AMVs lately that have convinced me that this is here to stay. There are fanvideos on this site, that are tributes to the anime they portray, and that's great, and I love many of them, but those are like fanvideos based on live-action. Other than the source and editing approach, they're the same thing, the same concept of honoring something that was already there. But AMVs on the same scala as movies, music, books, even anime? For that, you have to create something new. Something that wasn't present in your original sources. Something that came from within your own soul.
One thing I'd like to clarify though : Creating something that is not a fanvideo does not mean you can't let your love for your source transpire. In fact, you'll find all the videos listed here do that. But after all, it isn't any different from how Tim Burton loves Johnny Depp, is it? And it doesn't mean you can't let the story of the anime transpire. As long as the message is yours, that you have TAKEN CONTROL of the source footage, you've created some art.
Here are 10 videos I believe do that. They aren't necessarily the best edited vids on the org, but they're a step in the direction of making AMVs art. Is this a step in the right direction for the org? That's up to you to decide.

If you're wondering why I wrote this, the answer is simple : I discovered most of these thoughts while writing this. I couldn't figure out why I considered some AMVs to be of a higher status in my mind than others, and I was confused about what exactly my definition of art was. Writing helped me figure it out. Self-therapy, if you will :)
