LotR Stars Humor in Interviews - Just some notes for me XD
2003-12-21 06:19:45
Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins)
*You collect Star Wars toys. Are you hoarding Rings things too?
"Yeah! Absolutely! I have all the Toy Biz action figures, and I'll be getting everything else. This is my Star Wars!"
*Have you read the trilogy yet?
"I haven't finished it, to be honest. Which is terrible. It's two years since I've been a part of it. But when I got to New Zealand (where the movie was shot), I felt surrounded by information. I never felt I needed to read it. After that, I was tired. I will finish it, though."
*Did you keep souvenirs?
"I got one of the rings. It is my precious. I keep it tucked away."
Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee)
*How did you gain 30 pounds to play Sam?
"There was a lot of eating involved. Breads, pastas, meats and sweets, and nothing is off-limits. Peter (Jackson, the director) was going to hire a heavy-set actor in England or me if I said I would do what I was going to do. When I hit 192 pounds, I stopped counting. I'm 172 now and running on the treadmill."
*Do you mind being a sidekick?
"I prefer attendant. Sidekicks are comic relief, but I didn't want Sam to be comic relief. I wanted him to have dignity, poise, a gravity. He represents trustworthiness, honor, faithfulness--these lofty human values."
((*cough* I mean Guardern, not bodyg- I mean attendant. XD))
*Did the feet bug you?
"I was lucky I didn't have to wear a full facial prosthetic. That's what I loved. Just when you've endured the call of early morning with cold, sticky glue on your feet, some other poor slob came in and it was worse."
*Did you keep a pair?
"Yes I did, in full breach of the confidentiality agreements I signed."
Dominic Monaghan (Meriadoc Brandybuck)
*Describe Merry.
"He's the sharptest thinker of the hobbits, he reads situations very well and is quite intuitive. He is destined for good things."
Does being the tallest hobbit have its advantages?
"I think it allows me to meet more ladies."
*You have a knack for impersonations? Can you do any of the cast?
"I did Pete Jackson, Orlando, Elijah, Viggo, BIlly, Ian McKellen. But the best one I did is Karin Shah, Elijah's size double. I impersonated his voice and called the producers pretending to be him and Pete loved it."
*Favorite Rings character:
"I love Merry, and I'll possess him for the rest of my life. But Gollum is so fascinating. You never know what he's going to do next. He desires the ring and will do anything to get it back."
BWHAHAHA! Dominic rocks! me kisses him for his cuteness! XD Though Billy is cuter! lol
Billy Boyd (Peregrin Took)
*Describe Pippin, who seems a bit clumsy.
"He's the youngest, most immature and naive. He has to grow up quickly. He famously knocks the skeleton down the well in the Mines of Moria when they are trying not to alert the Orcs that they're there. He doesn't think of the repercussions."
*Do you relate to him since you are teh oldest actor playing a hobbit?
"Strangely enough, the first time I tried to read the book I was on holiday in Florida. I dropped it in the pool my first day there. If that's not a Pippin thing to do, I don't know what is."
*Are hobbit feet and ears a good look for you?
"I think the ears are a strange look for me. Quite big. BUt I loved the hair down to my shoulders. It felt right. I'm thinking of letting my hair go."
*You and fellow hobbit Dominic Monaghan are writing a script. What's it about?
"Two guys from Britain who end up in the Florida Keys and run a diving school by mistake. They lie their way through. As Dom says, it's funnier than a penguin playing a banjo."
hmmm I most see this movie... yess... my perious.
Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn)
*You only had a day to decide to take the part. Why did you?
"I thought for some reason, this part came to me, and if I don't do it, I will always doubt and wonder if I was being cowardly in not accepting the challenge."
*Did your 13-year-old son, Henry, encourage you?
"He was there when I got the phone call. He knew the books and said, 'Oh, that's an interesting character, Strider.' I talked to him about what it would mean, a lot of long absences. He knew it was important in a way to get his blessing. He visited the set when he could."
*Had you read the books?
"No, but I read them quickly. But I did recognize many elements from Nordic sagas (he is half Danish) and fairy tales."
*How were the battle scenes?
"Getting to do all the sword fighting was like being a kid again. In the second and third films, we start fighting on horseback."
*Didn't you chip a tooth during one clash?
"We temporarily glued it in, and I later saw a dentist. I also broke toes and strained things. But other people got hurt worse than that. Orlando (Bloom, who plays the elf Legolas) broke some ribs in a horse fall. No one wasn't committed."
*Tolkien is huge in Denmark. Are your relatives going to see the film?
"All my cousins, aunts and uncles bought their tickets a month and a half ago. About 45 of them are getting together for lunch and then go to the theater in Ringsted. Which happens to mean 'Ring place'."
*You all play this rather straight. Did you cut up off-camera?
"Sean Bean (Boromir, who also plays a human) and I made fun of the elves, and they made fun of us. They said we were dirty and smelly and less intelligent and graceful, all of which is probably true. We commented on their vanity: 'Well, when you are done with your nails, we are being attacked'."
*Favorite Rings character:
"Christopher Lee as Saruman did an amazing job. I never thought about his previous work."
HAHAHAH! Go men men XD drive off the elfs. XD mahahahha! heheh
Christopher Lee (Saruman the White)
*How does one embody a wizard?
"The most important think to remember about them is that they aren't human beings. They are immortal."
*When did you first read the books?
"When they were published. I had already read The Hobbit. There's never been anything like it. Tolkien didn't just invent a story, but myths and languages, new lands and races. I read them every year."
*How does working on Star Wars compare with Rings?
"Comparisons won't do. One is true sci-fi. The other is from the printed page. It's almost historic."
*Do you swing a light saber?
"Quite a lot."
*Are you naturally malevolent?
"I don't know why I'm good at being bad. In the words of Anthony Hopkins, 'I don't play villains. I play people.' Besides, it's more interesting to play the man in the black hat. The major problem is, I very seldom get to kiss a girl."
*Why are you so popular with with hot directors such as Peter Jackson, George Lucas and Tim Burton (Sleepy Hollow)?
"The directors in their 40s and 50s all say the same thing: 'I grew up watching you'."
Liv Tyler (Arwen)
*What about the Internet gossip about Arwen being transformed into a warrior?
"There's so much speculation, rumor and aggression towards my character, which has been strange for me to take on. At times it made me so sad, but at other times I chuckled, thinking, 'They have no idea what we are doing'."
I now have lost much self repect told Liz. makes me think one the reasons she did Lord was becuase of money... ~_~ I love how she insults the fans. yeah, sure I have repect tolds style, but I KNOW what did change Arwen character. How hard is that to see to? They changed her into a different perso then in the books. Eowyn the one who ahem the beat down, battle maidin. :D Plus I think becuase not putting the original character from the book to play the horse back, running away from the Nazgul sense the part where Haldir dies in the movie is left short of lot more connects tolds the character. Galadsomething something blah I'm not going to bother... was elf he meetings the runs to rivindell and te dies in the 2 book... hmm. I do believe it give more feeling to the views about love between Aragon, but I believe they threw Arwen into a message that was already said in the books they just too impaient to wait to show it, plus the I found out no where some ppl I meet would still say how even after that shot how women didn't have large part in the series. Hey, I believe it... personally I think they should show more in Return of the King HOW IT is actually how to fight the witchking.. since after all Aragorn did beat the group back with just his sword and a torch before... nah he was not in war. Honestly I think she just saying that because she feels inscure still about her character ther how it hit fans so much like that, and she trying hold to it still by saying something against them like that. It's not right I don't like, lot ppl who are something that are fans like Christopher Lee, reads since the start too.. sure both sides hads there points and she is playing Arwen, but the hell? Insulting the fans? Dude you wanted the part, your the star, it's part of the job being part the fame of royaltily in hollywood.. geez.
*Had you read the books?
"I read the books one time straight through and read certain parts millions of times, over and over."
*How was it speaking Elvish?
"It became easy for me in a good way. The words were just rolling off my tongue. I felt possessed sometimes."
*You are engaged to a rocker, Royston Landong of Spacehog. Inevitable?
"I think it was just him. I love what he does. I went on tour for the first time, and it was really fun. Kate Hudson was with her husband (Chris Robinson), since the Black Crowes were on the bill along with Oasis and Spacehog. I just got to let go of my career and home and just travel in a way I didn't get to do as a kid. I got ot learn about truck-stop food and some place called White Castle with these baby hamburgers, 25 for $3.50, and they were really good.."
*Favorite Rings character:
"I love the hobbits. If I could be anyone in Middle-earth, I'd be a Hobbit. The weed, teh food and the greenery."
heheh she like the hobbits more then the Elfs... mmm I don't think about it! lol why I mean. lol
Ian McKellen (Gandalf the Grey)
*When did you start your Web site, mckellen.com?
"Three years ago now. I always resisted doing an autobiography, but I enjoy writing. I thought I could put all the information I have on this site. When I posted an entry last week (with his reaction to finally seeing Rings), a million people had read it. I don't know how much longer I'll go on doing that, because it takes an eternity."
*Is there one question that keeps popping up?
"Something like, 'What is is like to play Gandalf?' It's like being asked, 'What's it like to have breakfast?' You can't really answer."
*Don't you consider blockbusters beneath you?
"I don't really make much distinction between one style of job and another. Stand-up comedy and playing Hamlet are more closely related than most people realize. I never wanted to be someone who only did theater and didn't do movies.."
*How was all that fake hair?
"The false nose wasn't bad, but the beard was a bloody nuisance. You're having a cup of coffee, and you have to avoid dribbling into it."
*Did you read the books?
"Not before I did the movie. If they had been a passionate part of my life, I would have been nervous."
*How do you like being on a Burger King goblet?
"I advise you to get a set. Only $1.99 each."
*Favorite Rings character:
"I like the animals. I like Bill the Pony and Shadowfax, my magic white horse. You haven't met him yet. I ride without a bridle, without stirrips and without a saddle."
Ian Holm (Bilbo Baggins)
*You played Frodo in a 1981 BBC radio serial. Did such Baggins baggage help?
"That's the answer to the question of when I read the books. The thing is, on radio you don't have to put the feet on. I seem to have bigger feet than anyone else, and I kept falling over all the time."
*The film opens with Bilbo's birthday party. Are yours such festive occasions?
"I don't celebrate birthdays. My kids and grandchildren threw me one for my 70th in September, however. It was really pleasant. We took over a restaurant in London. But no fireworks. It wasn't a surprise because I helped organize it."
*Favorite Rings character:
"Christopher Lee is just wonderful as Saruman. When we did the junket in Cannes, I was just gobsmacked by his linguistic ability. The press of the world was there, and he spoke Afrikaans, Swahili, Nordic languages, Spanish, German, French... not just hello, either. Ian and I asked him, 'How do you do it?' He said, 'I've been in an awful lot of films'."
*He has been Dracula more than anyone. Is he scary?
"Not at all. He can be boring. Simply because of his enthusiasm. He never draws a breath. Apart from that, he's an exhilarating character."
Cate Blanchett (Galadriel)
*Was it difficult working with all the effects?
"Peter (Jackson, the director) was always after the truth of the scenes. So that concern melted away. And the world is so completely realized that you can just lose yourself easily. I had to ride on this extraordianry swan boat, and I felt like the lady of the lake."
hmmm I want to remember those words of a director... what good words. :)
*Did you read the books?
"I read The Hobbit as a child and listened to the others on tape. I loved them, but what I was amazed by most was the vastness of them."
*Why she took the role:
"It sounds ridiculous," she has said, "but one of the reasons I wanted to play Galadriel was the ears. I've always wanted pointy ears." She keeps a bronzed pair on her mantlepiece.
*Favorite Rings character:
Gollum.
bleh my notes. XD I like the note about how they note all them have read all 3 books fully at times, Mr. Froodo hasn't fully yet too. hehe nether have I is why I say that. Though I really like how Viggo talked about the whole elf vs. men thing hehehehe good fun. :)
