video error to deathstar in 10 easy steps...
2006-04-04 00:15:26
[15:26] buma: hey - got a q for you on your 2nd vid... is there a vid error?
[15:26] buma: for the mep...
[15:27] buma: at 28.08, iirc
[15:27] christywardle: let me check
[15:27] buma: the the scene where the blood splashes on the straw hat
[15:27] buma: it happens twice
[15:27] christywardle: nope
[15:27] christywardle: I reversed the clip
[15:27] buma: oh, k
[15:28] christywardle: they do that in the anime as well
[15:28] buma: it looked like it 'skipped backwards'
[15:28] buma: like a vid error
[15:28] christywardle: it was there on purpose to MAKE you think there was an error
[15:28] christywardle: all part of my eeeevil plot
[15:28] buma: ohh, I see... guess I fell for it then...
[15:30] buma: so does this mean I've become your 'minion'?
[15:32] christywardle: lol
[15:32] christywardle: I have no minions
[15:32] christywardle: although, I have thought about hiring some
[15:33] buma: it depends on what medical and dental plan you offer your 'minion-wanabes' ya know...
[15:33] buma: they are a picky bunch
[15:34] christywardle: true true
[15:34] christywardle: and those minion unions are hard to deal with
[15:34] buma: ever since that whole 'death star' fiasco x2, the minion unions have become tougher
[15:34] christywardle: lol

being sick sucks
2006-03-28 18:34:56
okay, I was doing so well until this past Sunday. I have finally succumbed to whatever bug has been going around the office / homefront. I thought I was in the clear, but guess not. Since yesterday I've been stuck in the house and alone on the couch. But there is a good side to this. I finally had a chance to finish watching all 49 episodes of Aura Battler Dunbine, I got the chance to enter my A-kon entry, and I got a chance to re-encode and enter my vids for Anime Boston. So, at least I got some use out of this downtime...
Oh, btw, congrats to Jubbers and her winning vid, My fair...lady?
woot woot Jubbers!

the rush of being 'finshed'
2006-02-24 23:17:47
you know, there is just a great feeling when you finally finish something that you've worked so hard on and that finish line tape is just in site - and you finally, finally cross it. I just re-experienced this as I just finished my latest video, Threshold (not yet available for download, but soon, I promise!). I've 'done battle' with this video for nearly 4 months now and I think I've overcome a lot in the process.
first off, I am using the 'dreaded' NG Evangelion as a source - and not the platinum editions either. Thanks to some great scripting (thanks to Scintilla, IIRC), the footage has turned out great! But then there's this freaky 'jitter' that occurs during scene changes that I just don't undersand and it was a constant battle to edit around them (even right up to the bitter end of the video - I don't think I got rid of them all, but I gave it a good ol' try).
editing-wise, at about 2/3's of the way thru I hit a big block - how the hell do I finish this video? I had originally thought of an entirely different concept when I started the vid but by the time I actually started to edit, it evolved into something more akin to a character profile / drama thing. A lot of the footage was sorta left in the dustbin unused and a lot of new capture stuff had to be done. Overall, I used about half of the original clips I initially captured, and probably put in another 2-3 dozen or so clips and stills into that.
also, this is also the firsrt time I've done masking in any meaningful sense and boy, did I ever take advantage of it. The learning curve wasn't that steep of a climb, but it sure did take getting use to the air up there (which way does this arrow thing have to point to get what effect?) but overall, I think that it came out great (which, sadly, if you're reading this, you'll have to judge after I decide to put it on the site).
there was a last minute push to get this vid finished and on the last day of my editing, I thought I had it licked as I only had about 6 seconds / 2 refrains left on the song... and it took me nearly 10 hours just to get those last 6 seconds worked out. If I were paid per second of video, I'd go hungry :) For the most part, I think I averaged about 1 hour per second of video - which means I spent about continuous days making it (an hour or so at a time for the last 4 months). yeah, I'd be REALLY HUNGRY by now...
oh, also needs to be said that durring this time, I completed 2 segments for MEP's too (one for the Xmas MEP and one for the VD MEP) - both rather quickly too. What does this have to do with anything? I donno, but felt that I should mention it...
anyway, I digress from the point... Earlier this week, I got those 6 seconds done, got the bumper music selected, got the bumper images masked, assembled and timed, got the encode and got it off to the contest it was edited for and once I dropped it in the mail, that utter weight of work was lifted off my mind. Lightness and an airy feeling sort of floated me through of that day. All was happy with the world...
and then I rewatched the vid and saw areas for improvement - which I'm waiting on a decision from the contest coordinator if there will be an extension or not... if there is, back to work!
well, it was nice while it lasted... but who's to say that we just aren't geared for this - hence we make the things we do...
