JOURNAL: ShonenDizzyCow (Weng-Cheong Fung)

  • The future is almost here 2002-06-15 06:22:01 Okay, now I've spent about 65 hours so far on the current video. It's looks *much* better now, and it's fun to watch, and save some small scenes and a lot of tweaking/timing, is almost complete. I somehow reached critical mass on Thursday and spend about 15 intense hours on it since. While I'm not having high hopes, it would be nice if I could finish it by this weekend. Maybe 10-15 more hours of polishing, Q/A and looking at the video as a whole, to check for consistency and balance will do it. Maybe. Then the encoding process which should take about 5 more hours at least (curse you manual keyframing!). Looks like I overshot my (casual) target of having it being done in less than 80 hours. ^_^

This definitely falls under the 'big' videos for me.

Big videos? I've noticed that since I started making videos again, some of my larger projects have taken so much time to create that I spend months on them, so for variety and morale, I tend to alternate between 'big' video projects and 'small' video projects. At one point some months ago I was making up to 4 videos at once, alternating from one to another depending on my mood! :D

Rule of thumb: less than 40 hours* = small videos, from 40-200 hours = BIG videos. If I ever spent more than 200 hours on a video, someone please beat me with a stick. I don't recall when was the last time I made a music video that took less than 10 hours (not even my first vid).

    * Hours = Editing hours. Not capturing, not pre-sorting, not ripping, not song aquisition, not the 8 hour final encode. Hours mean PREMIERE + associated programs for effects (photoshop/after effects) hours.

Like it or not, good quality videos do take a minimum amount of effort and time. Unless your video is very short (less than 1 minute) you are probably compromising quality/potential on your videos.

Well I seemed to have said more than I expected. Maybe I should rip some of this for my profile.
  • AMVs as movie making. 2002-06-12 03:38:29 Yesterday I spent about 1 hour *just* polishing an existing single second length section of my current video, combining several concepts I've learnt recently. When people finally see it, however I doubt they'll even notice that it was an edited sequence - which is a good thing to me - I like to see how far I can push those very subtle effects as to totally make my effects seamless. There are still two interesting 'effect' or trick that I pulled in Evangelion Opus and Resident Eva (one each) that no one has yet to mention to me, and I'm not telling where it is. ^_^

It's fun looking at video making as if you are making a real movie - where the songs and the story/structure and concept are the script/dialog and you utilize the tools you have to the best of your ability to 'film' the pre-fab sequences that you want, sometimes shooting several approaches to certain sequences, and in post production add all the digital enhancements, or modify certain scenes and add film treatments that you need.

Also spent about another hour to experiment on creating an alternative (more original/creative) opening for the video, again about another second worth of video. I think it's been over 50 hours of editing time so far. I should keep a video making log the next time I make a video.

It also makes it easier to keep your work limited to certain sections of the video (when you've got limited time) instead of thinking off all the work that you’ll have to do for the entire length of the song, which can be quite daunting if you think about it when it can sometimes take a couple of hours of editing per second. Rendering a build of the work in progress often helps the morale too. ^_^
  • Yaay 2500+ profile views. 2002-06-11 23:27:33 I constantly wonder what's the average for the site. Well thanks to those who visited and enjoyed my videos.

And by posting this probably sends my journal views to over 1000. ^_^

I look forward to seeing Metropolis again, now on DVD with all the extras, I wonder how different it would be watching a show like that on the monitor compare to the cinema. o.O

    And Neverwinter Nights is Gold!
  • The Future is Not Set. 2002-06-10 10:26:33 Well I guess I've just about given up hope of finding a proxy for AX's contest as I don't know anyone personally who is going that I could ask.

Earlier, JACON's contest basically disqualified my entry unless I attended (which is basically all but impossible, see:location, well I could attend, but for the cost, I could get myself 100 new dvds JUST to reach the same country it is held in :P), and I missed Otakon's dateline (DOH!). Looks like I will have ready made-videos lying around for better days and months (and luck). I'm sorry, but one *may* have to wait another 4-5 months too see my next videos.

Hey, at least I learned how to make MPEG-2 videos and rescale them properly beforehand in VirtualDub, and now have lots of time to work on my current video. ^_^
  • Love is clockworks and cold steel, fingers too numb to feel. 2002-06-09 00:42:25 Abenobashi absolutely rocks. Gainax has done it again! Yaay!

And I thought that after watching episode 5 of FLCL, you can't crap much more mayhem into an episode, btu Ep 3 of Abenobashi tops it. Unbelievable. Great art too (very FLCL-ish, which is great).

I wished I had proxy for AX.... :(
