I personally like to find appropriate songs that I can edit, slash, cut and dice to fit my trailer-making needs, even if they aren't from the anime's soundtrack. However, this way tends to make the trailer an odd combination between a music video and a trailer. :?
Fear my incomprehension skills?

when I make a trailer, I try to mix both the original movie concept and the original anime concept together. Such as Lord of the Ballz and Teh Ring.. both are similar to their respecive movies and animes, and yet, both are completely different storylines from their movies and animes too. I think the best way to make a trailer spoof is to mix the 2 together and come out with something unique.
