Yaoi, Slash, Shonen-ai and... Alt Universe Videos? o_O

On the recommended amvs forum, I noticed that you had put alt universe with the yaoi, slash and shonen-ai... basically, I'm wondering why?
It seems a bit off-topic to me... and there was no mention of it in the request for a yaoi/slash/shonen-ai recommendation thread. (actually, I couldn't find any request for alt universe at all)

now don't get me wrong, I like the idea of alt universe videos. if anything, I would like to see it in a separate thread on its own (though i doubt it will happen, the thread is already well on its way, and changing it now could be problematic)

Not that I disagree with the question (I've been wondering the same thing myself, for a while), but if you look at how many posts the thread has with all three categories put together, and the fact that the majority of the posts are geared towards the yaoi/slash themes, I don't know that an alt-universe thread would really be any good.

The most common alternate universe vids are only alternative because they hold non-canon pairings. Most of those are slash. A few of them are crossover pairings, but there's already a crossover thread. Non-canon het pairings are usually so acceptable that no one thinks about the fact that they're as AU as the fanslash pairings.

Non-romantic AU vids fit under the parody umbrella, and again, the crossover thread.

I can't think of a single non-romantic AU video that doesn't fit under parody or crossover. The romantic het AU vids blend in the "Romantic" thread so well you can't tell them from the canon het vids.

It's the slash AU vids that stand out when someone tries putting them in the general romance thread. That's why we had to get yaoi/yuri threads. Since most slash vids are AU by default, they went ahead and put that in the title.

(Why aren't there more AU gen vids, or to translate into Less Dorky, videos that warp the original story into something new but aren't about romance? Why not? Why is the sky blue? Why aren't you all wearing pants?)

I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense to lump gen AU in with shounen-ai/yaoi, although shounen-ai/yaoi AU (the classic Heero x Duo type stuff) should be in the shounen-ai/yaoi thread. However, I don't think there's enough AU-in-general to merit a whole thread, so I'm glad it has some kind of home.
