I have three internal hard drives, a grand total of 400 GB. It's more than enough than I need - right now I have clips for like three or four AMVs lying around, with a load of space to spare. Although, to be fair, I don't keep the VOBs on my hard drive after I've clipped them.
Also, I try not to crowd up my hard drives with downloaded videos. I always end up burning them to CDs, which helps conserve space as well.
Still, each of my HDDs is more than half-full. I personally think 500 GB should be fine for any editor, and it's feasable that even something like 100-200 GB is enough, as long as you don't work on more than one video at a time. Heck, I know people that edit with <100 GB hard drives, so many of us probably don't NEED a lot of space.
Sure is nice to have, though.
