Very few of my videos are effectsy beyond fades and flashes. So what I'm going to say isn't some subtle way of saying "my method is best" because it's not my method at all.
But I think that the field of effects, and by effects I mean not simple "add effect" type effects like fades and grayscales, is what separates the art from the editing. ANYONE can make an effectless video, timing and lyrical synch and story come with practice. But not everyone can make an effects intensive video, whether from lack software knowledge, creativity, time, etc.
Things that everyone can do aren't special, I still like it when my mother toasts me a bagel but I could have done it myself. Things that are rare and unique are special and kind of merit more attention and praise. Like if someone cooked me a delicious gourmet meal instead of the toasted bagel.
AMVs with the crazy effects are the ones that are capable of really drastically changing an anime's story, even making two animes (or more!) into one cohesive story. The effects don't even need to be noticable, often it's best when they aren't, but they're still there. Like Pokich's video Trauer (I'm too lazy to bother looking for the link) is subtle, but the effects are necessary for the story he wanted to tell, and that video is regarded by most who've seen it as excellent.
So, anyways, I don't think that crazy, pointless, flashy effects make a good video any more than no effects do. But having no effects can limit you, and seeing the subtle, story driven effects videos is what's made me realize how limiting no/simple effects only can be.
