One more question before i embark
Well i have some good info down on the new video i want to create.. i will be making another Emotional/slower type of video.
One question i do have is.. has the skill level that todays editors are now operating at changed the "good" qualities of a video.
For example. My skills have not changed since i stopped making amv's about a year or two ago. So if i was just to go and try and make a video. would it be able to stack up?
Hmm i guess im not explaining this well...
If anyone could do me a favor.. could you download and watch the video in my sig.. it was the last video i made before i took a break..
In this video all i really wanted to do was instill an emotional atmosphere..
Is a good atmosphere nowadays impossible to acheive withought crystal clear editing and perfect cuts?
Has the bar for editing been risen so high that any attempts by older creaters are just a waste of time?
These are questions i would love to have answered before i start.
Not because it will decide whether or not i actually do a amv.. but more or less it will make me realize where i stand.
as always i appreciate any help and tips offered by the fine folks of this forum.

Close calls are always the most exciting. Coming close is always the most dissapointing.

Oh geeze, the bar again...read through this thread and this thread, thoroughly.
I'll leave it up to someone else to quote Kusoyaro, as I'm sure it'll come up eventually.
What's considered "good" and "atmospheric" are both totally relative to the different people who download your videos. Some people may be moved by your videos, others may not. You can't please everyone.
And so on.

And i must apologize for bothering you in your infinite wisdom with my small insignificant post..
I mean i can totally understand how my post could bother you.. and how unworthy of your time my post is.... and the attitude you gave in your response is totally justified by my lack of forethought i must have offended you deeply and for that i am forever sorry..
Next time.. i will realize how busy you are and refrain from asking questions that i could use to better improve myself... your exactly right...
i am so very sorry for my ignorant and time consuming post.. please forgive my insolence..

And God spoke unto the Chicken, and He said: "Thou shalt crosseth the road", and the Chicken did cross the road, and there was much rejoicing.

Will your video stack up with today's standards if you stopped time 3 yrs ago?
Is it pointless for old editors to try and impress today's audience?
Honest response: Probably not. Yes.
If you couldn't please the masses when you stopped improving, why would you have a better chance now? If you had a fanbase when you stopped (if you're that old), then maybe a few will still be around and they will still like your videos. Chances are they won't be around anymore, or they'll have changed as much as the rest of the org during your abscence.
What's changed? Well, we have even more newbs now than we did then, so you'll still be standing a little above the average editor (average being newbs by sheer number). But the good people who were here when you left have only gotten better since then. If you couldn't compete with them before, you have even more work to do now - gotta catch up before you're even equal to them, let alone better. On the other hand, we have That Site now, the "tube", where even a bad editor can be glorified if he plays to the anime fan audience. And if you never cared for the increasingly difficult effects-based editing style, then you won't be cowed to see how much more complicated (and expected) it is now than it was then.
We still have people who like simple editing. We still have people with "average" standards. You'll still get feedback on your videos if they're enjoyable for those people. If you're worried about the competition, you probably shouldn't bother editing at all - by the time you catch up they'll have improved, and really, do you want to spend that much time trying to please a bunch of annonymous downloaders on amv-org? ^^;

For the love of god, don't be so hard on yourself. This isn't a meritocracy here; everyone has just as much right to ask questions as everybody else.James Sharp wrote:[truncated]

Especially since this is the kind of thing you won't find in any how-to guide.
As far as I'm concerned, good timing and effective mood synch have always been important and always will be. I think the only thing that's really changed much in the past two years is special effects, and it's still just as true today as it was then that most videos can do without them just fine.

That's what I like, someone fully well aware of how worthless they are. Saves me the effort of pointing it out.James Sharp wrote:i am so very sorry for my ignorant and time consuming post.. please forgive my insolence..
Anyway, is your goal to make something so great people will line up around the block just to suck your dick? If so you're in the wrong fucking hobby. Most AMVers are male and there's something rather disturbing about a 14 year old guy on his knees going 'Shit, I got your pubic hair stuck in my braces!' No, if you want dick sucking I'd recommend writing yaoi fanfics so you get a large female following instead.
Is your goal to make something so astounding that you'll win all the cons and gets lots of free anime DVDs? Just do like everyone else does and get bittorrent. Piracy is so much easier than editing. You don't have to toss lens flares into a BT client to make people happy.
Is your goal to have fun? Then quit fucking worrying about how your skill level matches up, shut up, and go enjoy making a fucking video already.
Besides, according to the top 10% list the org thinks the best video ever is almost four years old. Many consider the best editor ever to be a guy who quit making videos in the 90's. Actually being good at editing is just as hard and just as rare as it's always been.

You realize that was sarcasm? Just sayin', cuz I know you tend to have a hard time picking up on internet sarcasm.Scintilla wrote:For the love of god, don't be so hard on yourself. Anyhow James ol' boy, you and I are in the same boat. But it's no biggie. Some people like fancy schmancy new videos with sparkle and lip sync and mountains of rotoscoping, and some like videos with potent imagery and lyric sync. Admittedly, the latter seem to be in the minority, but plenty of people still appreciate those videos, even if they aren't watched too often. Just make what you want, and in the end, if you can love it, it's a good video. Maybe it won't get the respect you think it deserves, but that comes with any fandom.

Ohsnap, The Bar again?
If your goal in life is to impress people. Try it in an area with more fans then anime music videos. Like Football or even Scate Boarding. Otherwise you will be "famous" in something only a small subculture of a small subculture will care for.
Or when you're REALLY desperate to become an internet celebrity. Just do it like Andrew Erickson. He's famous now.
Please don't even bother to answer with sarcasm.
