i'm borderline on it. i've been putting thought into switching from xvid.

what makes me hesitant is that some people don't have enough machine to play it.
on the other hand, do i want them to see my video? fuck the surpluss population, and all that -

From my experience it has the potential to be pretty good, but I'm not very good at encoding with it. I like XviD. I think I'm going to go back to that for a while.

A lot of people tend to release both XviD and x264 versions of their videos, letting the viewers decide what they want to watch.

Personally, I plan to offer my next large-scale release in x264, XviD, and MPEG-1 formats.

With none of them on Local, out of protest at the whole "you must download the LOCAL version, if one is available, in order to leave opinions" thing. For however long that lasts until I cave.

I've completely switched for everything from beta to final release.
x264 is far superior simple as that.

I love it. The only reason to not like it is to know nothing about it. I use to not like bittorrent, but that's because I didn't know how to use it and didn't know enough about it. Now I love it. I'm not saying your opinion is wrong if you don't like it, but I'm saying most likely you don't know how to use, don't believe the good things said about it and/or don't know enough shit about it to know better. If your an absolutist towards something you know nothing about, then I put you in the category of RamonesFan, and give you the title of Dee Dee Dee

It's awesome. If you want quality, you'll get quality with this baby.

That said, trying to reach out to a wide audience with .264 is not quite a good idea yet. I think it will take some time yet before it's as ubiqutous as DivX/XviD.

I would love the format if I didn't have to close out every other program to play videos in it smoothly - and even that's no guarantee. I have nothing against the newer formats. I just need an upgrade to handle them well. All the codecs in the world won't change that. Until that upgrade comes (and hopefully it will soon), I'm sticking with good old reliable XviD. I personally think that others should at least offer it, too, since there are plenty of other people in my situation yet. However, if they don't, that's their choice. I'll just save their videos for when I can watch them flawlessly. Eventually, everyone else will have no choice but to follow suit. It's just a matter of time.

This compression method is fairly new to the .org still and many people who log on just to watch amv's are not going to be using VLC player or another player that supports it without having the codec.

End result:
If you use this and dont provide an xvid link then you will get alot of complaints. Even if you list the programs and codecs needed to watch the vid in the comments people never read them or rarely care.

So I guess I'm sticking with xvid for a while still. The quality isn't bad with xvid or anything so it really doesn't bother me. But their are quality control freaks out there, and this is the codec for them.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson
