DEATH to the INTERNET, could affect AMV sites?

Post by rubyeye » Thu Sep 28, 2006 1:15 pm

Along with Prof. Lawrence Lessig's recent presentation at LinuxWorld, I found this disturbing presentation about the privatization of the Internet.

More information can be found at http://www.savetheinternet.com/ along with what you can do to help.

My vague understanding of this issue could mean that potentially Studios and Record Labels won't have to feel threatened by "creators" using "copywritten" material like music and anime because service providers could simply block out or diminish access to websites like AnimeMusicVideos.org, or YouTube, or MySpace, or anything designed as a creative media outlet.

Rather than speculate, how about we simply don't let Net Neutrality to disappear. It's bad enough Governments took away most of our freedoms already. The internet is the only thing "Free" we've got left.

I think Henry Rollins says it best in his final TEEING OFF spot. Scroll down and click to watch video.*WARNING* Bad Language Ensues (but it comes from the heart)

Stealing our internets?

If it does happen, it will indeed be the fault of the capitalist society that most of you love so much.

The 'free' internet as it exists now is, essentially, a near-communist structure in a highly capitalist society. What to wonder that maybe one day we'd have to choose between one and the other.

Save the internets. Join the Marxist-Leninist Party.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Umm... Duh.

Ever read those FBI labels and stuff that play before the movie on DVDs? Or all the fine print on the back of a CD? Unless you draw all the pictures in a video and make the music for it entirely by yourself (or get permission from the sources) then yes, it's very illegal. Most of what's done online is illegal, really.

Well...not quite. Copyright law isn't that draconian.

Content creators can authorize other people to copy and/or transform their material, and with such authorization, you're okay. A lot of the same rights are granted by international agreements on copyright, like the Berne Convention. This is fundamental to stuff like Creative Commons licenses, the GNU GPL, and so forth.

Now, most entities reserve all those rights, which is why you're often screwed, but I just wanted to say that that's not always the case.

Yes. Ripping DVDs in and of itself ALONE (that is, even if you don't do anything with that rip, just simply the act of ripping it) is illegal.

Heh. That means that as of right now, there are 101,124 instances of broken laws on this site alone. =O

It's like, one of those things you don't want happening while your around, or something. It kinda sounds like something like this had happened before, besides cable I mean. Like with alcohol or something.
