Awesomeness.
(finally got around to watching the final version of this)
You pretty much took care of all the qwams I had with this, and you already know I thought it was pretty awesome to begin with. was definately glad it got an award at pro.
A good note to go out on I think. As for warheart said, ofcourse ya can't expect EVERYONE to like your last video no matter how much work you put into it.
I do have to partially agree with him on the choice of anime, it does loose some replayablility for me because it is full metal alchemist, something thats not too original these days. I've pretty much seen it all with full metal alchemist, and since you didn;t do an original story, we already know the story, and what realy holds your attention in a drama video is the story. However, I think you did use the anime very effectively with the song, so...
anyway, awesome work.

Re: From the Ashes (my last video)
if you had an original though in your head, you wouldnt be worried about How high the bar is set and how difficult amvs are getting to be on the tio 10%... if you enjoy editing do it, if your worried about things like how good your vids are compared to everyone elses then were better off without you editing.silver_moon wrote:Some of you might recognize this video from the AWA Pro discs (it won Best Character Profile and was nominated for Best Drama and Best Storytelling).
Title: From the Ashes
Anime: Full Metal Alchemist
Song: "Hollow" by Submersed

I have to say this was the most time-consuming AMV I've made, and it'll also be the last video I'll ever make. I purposely tried to make my last video be my best one. (If you want to see my reasons behind my retirement you can read my journal).
So, I hope you enjoy it. Comments are appreciated!

I think you missunderstood her. I read through her entire journal entry, and it seemed more to me that she was more worried about improving herself for her own reasons, not to be at the top of the top 10%. everyone wants to do the best that they can do, well anyone with any pride in their work anyway, and the more you learn and are able to do, the more work you have to do to be your best. I think that just got to be too much for her schedule and patience. Although personally I think she just needs a break for a while, and she may end up wanting to edit again. I've felt this way before also and just took a haitus for a while. It happens to alot of artist in any kind of creative field.AMV_4000 wrote:

From a technical standpoint, I thought it was gorgeous. I really liked your transitions (especially the initial ones that looked like burning paper), and use of colour.
But, even after reading your notes, I still can't really get into the story you were trying to tell. For me, it really just seems like a retelling of FMA without Al.

wow I actually forgot there were comments to this video, since I had already watched it so many times to beta test it before it was released O_oMoonlight Soldier wrote: But, even after reading your notes, I still can't really get into the story you were trying to tell. I didn't read them either and assumed you were retelling the story of the series. I didn't even notice Al was removed, which I guess can be considered a complement to your editing skills to remove him without me noticing ;p So I guess you get some originality points for that, though I do have to agree with Moonlight soldier, the underlying story still seems the same as that of the anime, just without al.

x2. I don't understand why so many people seem to equate "having fun editing" with "improving your skills." I mean, yeah, I thought like that for a while, but I had just as much fun making any of my videos, and really that's what matters. There shouldn't be any shame in making a video that doesn't "push your skills to the edge" or whatever the buzzword of the day is, because it's about entertaining you.Beowulf wrote:That is the biggest puff paragraph I've ever read on the orgBakadeshi wrote:I think you missunderstood her. Plus, I think that making a big grandiose "zomg I'm retiring" post like this is a waste of time, especially since the journal entry says that she's is still going to be an active member on the site. What if she ends up getting the bug again and making a new video in a year, is everyone going to needlessly fanboy/fangirl her with "ZOMG YOU'RE BACK WE MISSED YOU!" comments/opinions? I doubt anyone would have the balls to call her out on the fact that she claimed to have retired. Well, that's not true, I know Beo, DMKA, and I would

Anyway, to get to something resembling a point, I think the biggest thing I've learned between my first Otakon ('03) and AWA (this year) is that editors aren't rockstars, they're normal people - and treating them like rockstars is kinda ridiculous. Respect is fine and dandy, but the absurd quasi-hero worship in 'retirement' threads isn't anything but mutual ego-fellation.

We did think about it, but then we realized we wanted to quit at different times, so...tyromaniac wrote:If you had planned it all, you both may as well had planned a hardcore callaboration project XD
I'd be comparing myself to my own videos, not to others. It would be boring to just make another video that isn't anything new or different for me. Otherwise I'd just watch my old videos.AMV_4000 wrote:if you had an original though in your head, you wouldnt be worried about How high the bar is set and how difficult amvs are getting to be on the tio 10%... if you enjoy editing do it, if your worried about things like how good your vids are compared to everyone elses then were better off without you editing.
I guess that's pretty much the boiled down version of it. I wanted to give Hohenheim more of a spotlight, too. The changes I made to the plot were basically just to make the show fit in with the song better, and to change how a few of the scenes looked.Moonlight Soldier wrote:For me, it really just seems like a retelling of FMA without Al.
The thing is, it doesn't entertain me anymore. When I first started, it was all like "ooh I can actually edit the scene to time to the beat, how cool is this!" but now it's like "meh, i've done this before...". That's why trying to do new things in my videos and being creative and picky with them was the only way I'd keep editing... but again, it's just become too time-consuming and annoying to do that anymore.dokool wrote:x2. Heh, I won't be making another. I think I've done this for too long as it is.dokool wrote:Plus, I think that making a big grandiose "zomg I'm retiring" post like this is a waste of time, especially since the journal entry says that she's is still going to be an active member on the site.
