  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

My "essay" for the Johns Hopkins undergrad applica

Post by jasper-isis » Thu Jan 12, 2006 5:31 pm

I was doing my college applications towards the end of last year when the following essay prompt from the Johns Hopkins University undergraduate application caught my eye:
Respond to the following, using whatever space and medium you like: If you could plan a day's adventure - starting from your home and spending only around $10 - where would you go, what would you do, and whom would you take with you?
Right away, I thought of making an AMV. I remained unsure about the idea for a while, since the AMV format puts a lot of limits on what I can portray, especially given the amount of time that I had to spend on this essay. After deliberating up until the 11th hour, I decided to do it.

Snow Days
Length: 1:42 (yeah, it's pretty short)

This is not exactly my most elaborate undertaking ever, but for all its simplicity, I'm quite happy with the result. For once, I actually had a good time editing under pressure. :)

If you're wary of this anime because it's getting overused in AMVs these days, remember that it's not really possible to build a plane for under $10; nor would I, given a choice, desire to fall into a deep coma for a day. :P My focus here is a bit different from what I've seen in other Beyond the Clouds videos.

Enjoy!

Given you're applying to my alma mater (CS, '03), and I loved Beyond the Clouds, I just had to grab this. (I remember that question from my application, too, but we didn't get the "whatever space and medium" segment on our question.)

Absolutely excellent video. Simple, heartfelt, and beautiful. This is the kind of video I love, and executed wonderfully.

Very cool idea :) Though I would wonder whether or not the people going over your application would really understand what they were watching. Perhaps they might think that you actually animated this yourself. I mean of course common sense would tell you that it'd be impossible to animate something like this by yourself in the timeframe you had, but to the unexperienced eye, who knows what they might think. I have had people see my videos and not really known what they were watching, and then think that I animated it myself.

All in all though, a very sincere, sentimental, and heartfelt vignette.

LantisEscudo: Thank you very much. :)

AtomX: No worries, I wrote them a short letter describing what AMVs are, so it should be pretty unlikely that they get that idea. Glad you liked the video!

krzT: It's not really spelled out as "Jasper" though... >:]

This is one of the most interesting reasons for making an AMV I've seen, and the video itself was quite good. I also enjoy a good find the name hunt.

I was afraid the name hunt might've been too easy, since there aren't too many places in the video where it'd fit in. :P

Either that, or more essay prompts like that one.

It's more wishful thinking than anything else, :P. Glad you liked it.

Haha, thanks. Let's hope my GPA is strong enough to back it up. x|
