plan c: we breed carrier pigeons to carry cds of our amvs to each other. we also paint the carrier pigeons in stealth coating so no recording company will be able to detect them and shoot them down in flight.

All videos with those artist names had there links removed that included the indirect links.mikestrife wrote:No one here expects the org to go anytime soon. You're right it is only 3 artists, but we are talking about a plan b for the absolute worst case scenario in which many more artists want their files removed.
Plus the people who've had their video removed already could use a plan b.

What are you talking about? All I said was the org isn't dying any time soon and that this whole situation is being blown out of proportion. And I stated what wil most likely happen if it does, we will just revert to independent hosting. What did I miss?requiett wrote:SOAD doesn't know how to read between lines very well.SOAD2k8 wrote:The org is not going to die. We are talking abouot 3 ARTISTS out of countless thousands. It is not the end of the world. The worst that could happen is that we'd need to find new ways to host our stuff, thats it. We've done it before, and if we need to we'll do it again.

I don't think a new level of dedication would surface, not to the point where the lazy-bad people disappear. I can afford webspace, but that doesn't make me any better an editor. Money has nothing to do with talent at making amvs. Maybe people would be more selective about the videos they share, but we'd already have that if we were able to delete our hosted videos at will - people would get rid of the old and bad in favor of the new. The new wouldn't be any better than the new is now, it would just be fewer since fewer people in this hobby have steady paychecks to maintain those monthly hosting fees.
At best, you'll be able to find the good videos easier because there will be a lot fewer vids to look through. That won't make those 'good' videos better, just easier to pick out of the smaller available collection. This is assuming the good editors are the wealthy editors and not the poor ones.
But, yes, it will be nice to still have the org as a catelogue if the local server is shut down. I used it as such before I joined, and it was still the best place to find a variety of videos. There was just a lot more searching through broken direct links, is all. I remember going through 150 direct dbz links once, and only finding two that were active (on dial-up it took about two days). Talk about having trouble finding the good vids when you're lucky to find any vids - and that from the most commonly used anime (even then). I got more amvs from p2p back then - we'll just go back to that.
Maybe if the broken links were all removed, then the site would function better as a 'host your own' list. I really don't want it to go back to a huge collection of broken links and very slow search-time testing each one.
/note - I'm not pessimistic about the local server going down, I just don't see it as an improvement to look forward to.

It could be also a good thing I think, who knows.requiett wrote:
I could see the org remaining as a catalog, whereas we would merely provide our own webstorage. I'd personally be in favor of that option, as it would filter out a lot of the crap and people who aren't serious as editors. It'd certainly do a lot to galvanize a lot of the studios as something more than just a pointless brandname (some already pay for their own space). I can see the annoying "Please donate" boxes dropping off for you leeches as well.
Well, if it comes down to that, I think you'd be surprised by the level of dedication that will surface to ensure the future of this site. What do you think?

It's not that bad at all.

I find bats are a better choice. It's harder to detect them since they fly at night. As an added bonus they are, basically, giant flying rats. The weasel RIAA lawyers eat rats for dinner so even if they caught a carrier bat there's a decent chance they'd try taking a bite off it, thus damaging the CD beyond usability so they never do know what we're passing back and forth.downwithpants wrote:plan c: we breed carrier pigeons to carry cds of our amvs to each other. we also paint the carrier pigeons in stealth coating so no recording company will be able to detect them and shoot them down in flight.
The disadvantage is that we'd be seeing someone invoke Batman even more than they currently do.
