Because everyone's different, and some people are *really* different.

And...because some people like to hear how their fellow members differ from themselves. It's a point of interest, a way of understanding the group by learning the individuals.

This topic isn't discussing whether a '5' is better or worse than a '2'. It's discussing what *makes* that video a 5 instead of a 2. We all know good for one person can be awful to another. This thread discusses what makes a video good or awful, and how they distribute attributes of a video to assign those 'good' or 'awful' ratings.

/

I really don't see the need to spam threads just because they don't seem interesting - getting those threads locked despite the people who were actually trying to have a discussion. If you're not interested, don't post. Why is that so difficult?

And that question isn't directed to Pie Row or Flint. It's to the next person to spam this thread, the uninterested person who'll spam here just to get this thread locked like the 'local download' thread was locked. We don't have enough discussion here. Don't kill the threads where people are actually discussing things.

one to five

Post by ShadowOfTwilight » Thu Jun 02, 2005 8:38 pm

Five: Blows me out of the water, the kind of vid I'm itching to show my friends.

One: It makes my eyes burn... i.e. "Wow, that was bad, no pocky for a week"

Maybe i'm just masochistic, but I try to watch every AMV I download the whole way through. I've been rewarded a few times, I must admit; although the vid had a weak opening, it didn't turn out half bad. Most of the time though, I just end up causing myself pain, hahaha... but oh well. One can learn from the mistakes of others, ne?

Also, godix said something I found strange...
Ops are left by people who liked the video enough to go out of their way to comment.
I don't know. When I leave an op, its because I found that AMV worthy of an op... even if it's a crappy vid, if it looks like the creator can really gain something from feedback, I try to give it. Unfortunately, this makes my op averages go down reallllllly quickly, lol.

My star rating system:
1 - the damn thing doesn't work when I download it, and it isn't a codec problem.
2 - Video works, but was just thrown together completely randomly.
3 - Video works, but I found it kinda borring.
4 - video works, I enjoy it a lot, and like watching it.
5 - I loop this baby about fourty times before I stop paying attention to it.

I also try to watch videos multiple times before rating them. I also sometimes rate on my sheer enjoyment of the video. If it uses an anime and a song that I don't like, I usually don't get it, but if I do, just randomly, then I usually don't like it very much, and will lower the score. Bleh, I have lots of factors that figure in, but what I have put down is basically what I try to do. I am on dial up, so I try to only download videos I *think* will be good (mostly off top 10% list, and those on people's "favorites" list) to avoid wasting the 3-6 hours it takes me to downlod the video.

I was speaking in general. I have 74 ops amoung all my videos. Out of those 74 there are 69 that are various forms of 'nice video' or 'you suck donkey balls'. Of the five remaining two were because I asked in a free op topic and looked at the person usefulness before asking, one was someone I gave a free op so they oped me in return. and the last two were unsolicited out of the blue type ops. So out of 74 ops only 2 were given to try and help me without any action on my part prompting it. There's nothing wrong with this, it's nice to know when someone liked my stuff enough to tell me, but it does indicate few ops are about helping someone.

Since everyone else is doing it I guess I'll toss in how I do star ratings:
1 star - I saw 20 seconds of the video before I deleted it and I hated it so much that I'm hoping you die a slow lingering death very soon.
2 stars - I saw 20 seconds of the video before I deleted but I didn't hate it enough to want to hurt you (much).
3 stars - I saw the whole video. If it was more than a day ago chances are I don't remember a damned thing about it but I did actually see it all.
4 stars - I liked it enough to keep it around but it wasn't really great.
5 stars - I love this video and as a result I love you also. Will you marry me? Or at least teach me how to be an AMV god like you?

I'm odd. But this is how I star rate.

1 - the worst possible AMV EVER, or it is not an AMV ("Road to Iron Chef", "It's Tricky to be SHameless", etc).

2 - it f'ing sucks ass, but you put effort into it, so you don't get a 1.

3 - average as all get out

4 - slightly better than average

5 - I've had a religious expierence watching your AMV.

I wonder what all the big deal is about star ratings lately.

In this thread where everyone posted the same basic information I added up all 20,000 stars and came up with This.

Funky radar chart those who like pictures instead of numbers.

Basically all that shows is that it's not really connected. OPs are a long form of feedback, and when used well, very effective where stars are just a sort of insta poll. If you get good stars, yeeeha. If you get bad stars and good ops.. bigger yeeeha. I wouldn't worrry about it too much, after all it's a hobby it's supposed to be fun not ulcer inducing.

You've downloaded and watched 46 non-AMVs from this site? Only one of those could be the worst possible AMV ever, so the other 46 have to be non-AMVs.

I personally love how you say this line then continue on to spend more effort on evaluating stars than anyone else I've seen...

Just for the record, that thread had nothing to do with opinions, or stars in relation to opinions and the gaping difference between them when it comes to certain vids. It was largely a poll - what's your distribution? Cool. Here's how it ranks when taken as a group. Cool chart! Thread's purpose served, lock.

This thread again touches on distribution, but it's entirely voluntary. The *point* of the thread isn't "how many 5s do you give?" It's why do you give the score you give? And it actually started as why is there such a gaping difference between high stars and high ops? No where in this thread is it asking people to give their distribution (which was the point of the other thread). But...even if it were asking for distribution-with-explanation, after the other thread was locked the only way to continue the discussion would be to start a new thread. Whether the discussion was started in the other thread is a moot point - the other thread is locked. We can't add onto it. Hence the new thread.

What I like is that people here are actually explaining what makes a 5 a 'great' score, instead of just telling how many 5s they gave. My interest in the topic lies in my curiosity about members of the site and what they like when it comes to our shared fandom - amvs.

I still think your chart is cool, though.
