A and B editing lines
I'm not very technically-oriented, but I'm willing to learn. That said, I'm trying to upgrade from WMM2, but I'm not sure what to upgrade to. I'm rather fond of the idea of A and B editing lines and my question is this: which programs (that could be run on Windows XP) have this? I think I remember reading that Premiere does, but I'd like to know if I can find something a bit cheaper than that.
So, I'm turning to the people who have experience with these matters - you. If you happen to use a program with A and B editing lines or know of one that does, please tell me.
Thank you in advance for helping. Also, I'm sorry if this sounds like a newbie question.

Who are you, and why are you using my avatar?
That asked, I do know Premiere Pro ($700) offers A/B track editing, as does Ulead Media Studio Pro ($300). Both also offer multiple overlay tracks in addition to the A/B track.
Most other editing programs I've seen have single-track editing, with multiple overlay tracks. These include Vegas ($560), Final Cut (Mac only, $300 Express, $1000 Full), and AVID Xpress ($1000, includes both Mac and XP versions).
Premiere, as of version 6.0 (I believe), can also be run in single-track mode. MSP, at least as of version 7, does not have a single-track mode that I know of.
I'm not sure what kind of editing environment iMovie (Mac only, Free with purchase of a new Mac, $80 as part of iLife '05) and Windows Movie Maker (Free for Windows XP) offer, as I haven't seen much of either program.

No it doesn't. Premiere Pro offers tons and tons of simultaneous video tracks, but the "Video 1A/B" paradigm from Premiere 6 and earlier is now gone.LantisEscudo wrote:That asked, I do know Premiere Pro ($700) offers A/B track editing...
As a result, video transitions can be applied to ANY video track, not just Video 1.

I can confirm that MSP still has A/B editing, though, since I'm looking at the most recent version (Version 7) right now.

Wizard!
First off, I'm a nobody. Sadly. v_v Secondly, it IS a cute .gif isn't it? Are you perchance the person who made it? That'd be cool. Actually, I've just started making icons of my own (80x80, of course, for this site), so I hope to use those soon instead of ripping off other people's. ^_^
Thank you very much for the rundown on programs. Now that I know where to start, I think I can begin researching other points of those programs and decide which one would be best for me. I'm still iffy about Premiere for cost reasons, but it really doesn't seem like I'm going to get anything cheap anyway. They're all pretty expensive, but I guess that cost=usefulness...most of the time.
Also, I used iMovie for a class once, but I didn't like it. Besides, I don't have a Mac at home anyway. I was going to say that it is similar to Windows Movie Maker, but since you're not familiar with that either, I guess that doesn't help much, eh? Let's put it this way: WMM2 just doesn't cut it anymore. My ideas have outgrown the program's capabilities.
Thanks again, to both Lantis and Scintilla.

Re: Wizard!
Actually, I am, made from frame grabs of the GBA Angelic Layer game. (I botched a pixel near his right shoulder in one frame, which is how I knew it was the one I made.)dj_ultima_the_great wrote:First off, I'm a nobody. Sadly. v_v Secondly, it IS a cute .gif isn't it? Anyway, if you want to give Premiere a try, Adobe makes a free 30-day trial available here.
Ulead makes a 30-day trial of Media Studio Pro available here, if you'd like to give them a shot.
Vegas has a trial available here, though I'm not sure what the limitations are on this one.
Give the ones you like a try, then buy the one you liked best.

Hey, thanks again! I'll definitely be sure to test out each program. It hadn't even occured to me to check the sites for trial downloads. Just goes to show what MY natural hair color is.
Also, Angelic Layer game? Must be a Japan-only thing. Only they get the REALLY interesting games.

PS: grr...now I'm mad. I just tried to use of my newly-made icons for an avatar and just realized that they have to be 6KB or smaller. *sigh* Extra work... So, I may end up keeping Wizard for a little while longer yet...if you don't mind, of course. ^_~
