The “liberals”, being the effect users, people who make things go flash, flash. (I believe I fit in this category.)

I am also aware of those who do a little of both, and to you pick a side. (neutrals)
I'm sure Robert Fripp has something to say about your generalisation of the amv comunity. And I'm sure that Oto will soon expell some Frippery on your ass.

Some people are like; “I would have removed just about every effect in the video, there nothing but distractions”. I’m like if I were to do that I would not have made the video at all.
Opinions like that are perfectly valid. Stop for a second, meditate on the thought, then reply responsibly.

Oh, my, my, my. If I thought everyone was going to get hung up on the terminology I would have used something different. Its not it’s going to be stamped on your forehead. As I said before I am not trying to turn the forum into a political debate, if that where the case the thread would already be locked.

Are you trying to say something, brutha? If you are, I'll kick your interASS!

The "Battle" has already happened.

This whole raised conciouness about effects is the result of a backlash among creators. Around the time Euphoria came out in early 2003 effects were just starting to become common in amvs, the fan reaction was huge and several videos gained astounding popularity. For many of the fans and convention goers effects were all that mattered.

OF course AMV's are not MADs and have a long history as an artform independent of effects. So creators rebelled and went so far as to say that effects videos were meaningless.

Euphoria jumpstarted everything. Some of you weren't around at the time but for a while the forum was effectivly divided in two: those who liked Euphoria, and by extention, effects, and those who didn't. I'm ashamed to say I was among the latter, though looking back on it now the distinction is trivial.

All that's happening now is a few newbies stirring the pot asking "can a video be good without effects?" They have already been intigrated, it is now a continum there is nowhere to put a battle line. And aside from a few old schoolers like Ari, no one really cares that AMV's have effects.

That's my view on the subject.

I'm an oldschooler? That's kind of cool.

I don't mind that they have effects as long as I don't have to emulate or watch them. It's like shoujo versus shonen - I don't mind that most fanservice vids feature bouncing boobs as long as I don't have to copy or watch them. I'm only in it for the fanservice (me being the fan), so mix something I generally dislike into a setting I love, and I'm all over it. As long as I can find or make vids that service my wants, I don't care what everyone else does.

I just dislike being told what to do, and effects seem to be the 'thing to do'. I don't wanna conform. Grrr...

ugh, here's to not reading the rest of the OP
Poetic_Kaos wrote:Now what I have a problem with is people commenting on some of my videos as not focusing on the anime. I was not aware that was a prerequisite for making a video.

I thought the purpose was far more basic than that. Do you not watch AMVs to be entertained? Does it always have to be a tearjerker?

Some people are like; “I would have removed just about every effect in the video, there nothing but distractions”. I’m like if I were to do that I would not have made the video at all.

Is this all in my head, are there not armies preparing for battle?
keep in mind there is a diverse audience at the org. some are primarily anime fans, some are primarily music fans, some are primarily music video fans. they are going to have very different preferences and expectations, not only in use of effects, but also in video structure, direction, style of presentation, consistency with anime source, consistency with music, and so forth. if you make a video that sticks closely to the anime source, people who have not seen the anime will not get the full effect of the video. if you stick closely to the lyrics in the music, you may end up taking scenes out of context and confusing your watchers. it is very rare to find a video that can impress all groups of viewers.
