Translating "Protège Moi" (......... - Tsumibito n

Post by KaneDragon » Tue Mar 08, 2005 8:49 pm

I downloaded Protège Moi (Tsumibito no kashou) a week or two ago and liked it enough to go to the trouble or trying to translate it and sub it. No doubt a mangled translation, relying as it does on babelfish, some guy on some forum, and own opinion. The given English lyrics go off on some wierd tangents--the French version talks about ghosts, while the English talks about corporate America and cakes(?)--so I wanted to get a version more true to the original for my hardsub. Here's what I came up with (** lines gave me the most trouble):

It's the disease of the age,
An epidemic that spreads,
The party ends with the descension **
Of thoughts that freeze our hearts.

Lowered eyes and gray faces,
The ghosts of our past awaken;
We open the latch on the gate
Of the slum that we call home.

Maybe we're victims of fate--
Remember when we'd celebrate:
We'd laugh and party until dawn, **
And now we are all alone.

Dreams of happiness lost,
Dreams of innocence gone; **
We're left with a lifetime to cry,
And now we are all alone.

Any suggestions (be gentle  )?

Well, as someone who liked the video a whole damn lot, let me say thanks. It's nice for someone who (shameshameshame) doesn't know French to be able to figure out just what the lyrics mean.

...which only further reinforces my liking of the video, since I can see the symbolism that went into it.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Thanks. 8-)

The party ends with the descension **
Of thoughts that freeze our hearts.

If someone has another way to phrase this, feel free to post it. 8-)

The party ends with the.... arrival? Thoughts or fears?

Or maybe...

"The party is over as we fall/
thoughts that freeze our thoughts."

Ehh... neither flows very well as a sentence, though.

Maybe:
The party is over, crushed (staggered/brought down) by
Thoughts that freeze our minds (hearts)
?

If you noticed, I matched the same syllables as there are in the french version... so I'm a bit confused as to why you don't think it flows. o_O

and "crushed" wouldn't pass for "a descends," which means to step down from or to fall. Crushing implies being pushed down.
