No huge effects... no problem?

Post by ashiteruSweetSurrender » Sun Dec 26, 2004 4:20 pm

I have WMM2 and I was just wondering if an AMV can still be worth something even though it dosent have speacial effects... you know the stuff this program lacks... It's kind of making me want to wait till i get a better program... but i don't want to wait... but I don't want my ideas to be wasted.. what would you do? :?:

Special effects don't mean a goddamn thing.

Seriously.

If you want effects, try mixing a paint program and VirtualDub to make your own. Wmm won't stop you if you do what Premiere users do - supplement the video program with a bit of photoshop-work.

As for effects in general, my favorite vids are drama, and few of them use extensive effects. If the mood catches me, there's no need for glitter. But again, if you want glitter, you can have it if you experiment a little.

There are plenty of videos that have been done well without effects and didn't really need any. A vid can be good without them of course. However, if you want to use effects I suggest forgetting about Paint and Vdub since the only thing you'll get is a waste of time, nothing more. In that case just get a better program (After Effects, AVid, Combustion etc.)

Since i've heard this arguement a thousand times, I'm gonna do something new this time (and some of you might think i'm an ass for it, but I like to mix it up a bit :P).

Star Wars Episode 2 - AMAZING EFFECTS - Sucky movie
Punch Drunk Love - No Effects - Amazing Movie

The point? Absolutely nothing.
My thought is, just apply what I said to everything else.

If you don't feel like using effects, don't use them. If you do, please feel free. If someone says not to, or to use them because you suck if you don't/do. Tell them to screw off and do what you feel like.

Now now....

Episode I was far worse. :P

If you don't want to waste the idea, make it. That's what I do anyway.

Procrastination on the other hand.....

And yet Koop's vid is still the best known for awesome effects made mostly in MSPaint. Go figure.

and add avisynth for nonlinear editing.

although it is possible to make good vids without effects, sometimes what you imagine and plan in your head can't be achieved without effects.

Basically a good rule to use with effect is to ask yourself if using effects enhances your concept ir is it just there to look pretty. If the video works without effects then it's a good video.

See I am one of the people who appreciate Euphoria on a technical level because of all the effort put into making it work with such basic programs and it IS beautiful but it is not one of my favorites simply because the effects hindered the character focus of the video.

I personally use adobe and have used after effects when needed. However on the other hand my most recent video was made using nothing more than a couple speed adjustments and basic cross dissolve transitions. I like that video better than anything that had effects used at all.
