What Are You Playing Now Thread (Experimental Thread :O)

Post by )v(ajin Koji » Tue Dec 07, 2004 4:01 pm

I thought this might be worth a try although it's more likely to fall on its face.

It works like the "what are you currently listening to?" Thread, except whenever you can post a sample of what you are playing. I will post something of myself playing soon to get things started :S

Just an idea guys.
I'm bored and you're dumb. A match made in heaven.

I like the idea.

I'm currently listening to The Back Horn - Hikari no Kesshou (30 second sample)

I definitely need to make an AMV out of this one day.

I believe he means what you are playing right now,
as in you holding an instrument, and composing music.

Dude, you can play and compose at the same time (improvving doesn't count)?

Of course!

I have learned to freestyle rock over the many years of hard practice!

As to somewhat relate to the topic, my friend is playing Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick (amazon sample on link in case you haven't heard Moby Dick before-and shame on you for that!) with his electric guitar in the garage this moment. This guy has been playing the guitar at least 4 hours a day for a whole year and a half, and has improved at an unbelievable insane rate. Unfortunately, I don't have any recording device at this moment to let you guys listen to him. Sorry.

Thank you for giving me a reason to get off my lazy ass and actually practice. I recorded some stuff last night but was a little crunched for time this morning, so I'll probably post it tomorrow. The music isn't very inspired, but at least I got a good noise reduction curve worked out for my current mic setup.

Playing Bass to Rose of Sharyn - KSE
Song is pretty good and this gives me a reason to just smack my hand around the bass for a while.

Wow, an actual music post.

These two cuts just go to show that even though I can technically play guitar, I probably ought not to be allowed to. In addition to being out of practice (as the second one shows pretty clearly), I'm not all that good.

some morose riff
DEATH FXOXING METAL

These are both single tracks; the reason why it almost sounds like there's a bass line on the second one is that it's being played on a Carvin 7-string, and the low B is imitating the bass. This is a commonly used trick to make metal played on 7-strings sound more complex and technical.

The last one is a bass piece, which shows that I don't totally suck at instruments I know how to play. This was the last of several takes, because I couldn't get a decent sound at first.

Variations on Burton

This one starts off as variations on the first riff from Cliff Burton's bridge bass solo in "Orion", and then starts to cut into the first riff from "Anesthesia", then starts moving between the two. I've done variations on both riffs before, but this is the first time that I'd attemped to stick them together, so there are some weird intervals here and there. The clacking sound you occasionally hear is caused by strings or fingertips hitting the exposed parts of the pickups; if I was picking this instead of finger-plucking, the clacks wouldn't be there, but the tone wouldn't come off right either.

These are more or less not produced; I did some noise filtering, volume adjustment, and DC offset correction, but since I was recording direct to digital through a pair of earbuds, most of this really ought to be counted as just recording-artifact removal.

Hopefully people are not too underwhelmed and dismayed by these.
