What should happen to the Top 10% Videos if this happened?
The Top 10% Video List wrote: R = average for the video (mean) = (old score)
Doesn't this reflect upon the average mean of the scores given to opinions?

My personal thoughts to this concern:

I believe having score numbers in opinion is a pretty nice feature.
It can play many rolls, of course, good and bad.
Although it does seem to give some leeway to not giving much explanantion to the video, numbers are.....nice.
They do not explain throughoutly, which is why I think it can be of some use, somewhat?
Numbers can express values quickly.
When I look at some of the video infos, I take a peek at the average opinion scores given by the opiniators to see how they thought of the AMV. It can give a quick value of how people thought of the video rather than reading through the words to see how they thought of it.
Of course that above statement clearly will not be all that accurate, due to the variety of preferences people have of how to rate- but I think that's the price it comes with.

I can generally relate to Otohiko's statement- everyone has their own way.

I don't think there would ever be a definite rating method that will apply to all the video equally.

The preferences of the people's rating are different, and frankly I don't have much of a problem with that.

I believe my explanation above has many contradictions.

I think with star scales (and it's auto ignoring and stuff), this is a very interesting idea. I always write my comments anyways, so there isnt anything in the numbers you can't see in the text.

Of course, what happens to the top10% (which really doesnt change too often, people should be looking at say, awards from cons or vca), but star charts arent too accurate, but the suggestion thing apparently is. and what would happen to all those reviews that were just straight 10's with almost no text. :D

My primary concern is about encouragement and discouragement. Most importantly, does an opinion encourage more creativity from the person who received the opinion? How does any opinion encourage or discourage creativity?

I hope that everyone here who takes it upon his or her self to write an opinion wants to encourage creativity. I think that opinions produce the greatest benefit when they support and foster the creative effort it takes to make something brilliant.

I have said that anime music videos are intended for entertainment, however, that does that make them unimportant. Entertaining another person is a great gift. Instead of rewarding the most entertaining music videos with money, we give praise. As an audience of this type of work, that is the bulk of what we can give. We can also give encouragement.

Encouragement helps people to unlock their hidden potential, grow their budding talents and uncover their latent greatness. Excellent work of distinction, superiority and high quality comes from serious effort. It take a certain faith that what you are doing is worth it, to engage in such an effort.

Why do we create? Why go through all the work to make a music video? We do this out of our desires. One of the desires that drives the creative process is the desire to be seen. Every artist wants to be seen.

This can be a terrifying prospect. This is because when we are at our most creative, we are also at our most vulnerable. The beauty of Beethoven’s symphonies is his humanity, his fear and longing expressed in haunting orchestrations. We also witness a tortured soul on display in the works of Van Gogh. His greatness comes from exposing his fragility. The achievement may be different with the creation of a music video, but the artistic aim is the same.

Opinions matter most in how much they encourage artistic greatness. Those opinions that discourage creativity rob the world of works that have not yet been crafted, works that might have been masterpieces. You never know where genius will manifest itself. It can come from the most unlikely of sources. Without the correct nurturance, then greatness can die unborn.

As a community of artists it benefits us all to provide encouragement rather than to provide discourage. There is enough discouragement in the world already.

Technical guidance can help a person to achieve superior craftsmanship. Yet without a soul to guide that craftsmanship, the work is ultimately pretty but essentially empty.

Yeah, especially since people already leave reviewless scores. :P
