Should we allow people to take names from inactive accounts?
In the username change request thread, people are starting to ask to have their nicknames changed to that of old, inactive accounts. That's doable if I first rename the inactive account. The question is, should I?
I think it should only be considered if the inactive account:

Has not been used in at least a year
Does not have any videos or opinions associated with it
maybe does not have any forum posts
[edit: I have to look through the database to see if I forgot anything important]
Essentially, I'm leaning towards either "no, we shouldn't do that. Usernames on a first-come first-served basis" or "only if the account was never really used."

Agreed!derobert wrote:"only if the account was never really used."
I talked to Phade a long while ago to get mine changed...

But that was after sending a ton of email to the person who had the name to see if the user/username was still active. After a month of no replies, I talked to Phade. So, I wouldn't see any problems with it if the person wanting the name contacted the person first with a month in between asking and requesting the name change.

I mailed my dead friend too (zero). Apparently his E-Mail is inactive and I haven't seen any other way of getting to him.
As I said before:
"I'd say if they are active enough in the fourms and a-m-v.org in general, let 'em have it. But then again, I'm in no position to say that..."
Thoughts?

If they have videos: definitely no
If they have left ops: definitely no
If they have forum posts: definitely no
If they have donated: definitely no
If they have logged in sometime in the last lear: definitely no
But failing those, I don't have a problem with this although the database is a little tircky for getting rid of things. How do you suppose the old name should be cleared?

Sounds good, like AD said. You probably don't want to delete anything, but you could rename, say add a postfix with the last year they logged in. I could be quadir-1991 or something. Not that you don't see 4 digit numbers after people's names... or something.derobert wrote:"only if the account was never really used."
I think AD's reasons for `no' are pretty spot on though. Donate today, and protect your nic forever, might you want to ever come back!

It's a little icky subject and whatnot.
If they have video, I believe in a big NO.
I don't find it very respectful having your work removed for some other person wanting to receive your name. Nor having your username modified. No matter how old it is.
Forum Posts: No
They made posts. I don't think deleting them would be very good... Nor modification.
Last Login: Not sure
If they had a log-in, personally, I'm not sure if that is a good idea no matter what the date. People can get very busy, whether they like it or not. Even for years.. But yet, you can easily say that the user lost interest, and isn't planning to log back in.
No log-in: Yes-ish
If they never had a log-in....They would have no reason to use it...Yet.
////
I really can't find any more aspects.
Kind of a hard subject for me to give a solid answer
I wouldn't appreciate it if I had my username changed for missing out for a few years....
Yet at the same time, you can easily say that's the way it goes for not using the screename efficiently enough to make one in the first place....

I think you are misunderstanding. Its not saying that accounts will be purged after a year of non-use. Such as, you might have to leave tomorrow and come back in 2 years to find your account missing...post-it wrote:hmmm . one year is not really fair - 18 months and no use, post's nor uploads
would be more understandable; however, concidering how little space is used
on the Donut for holding non-user info - is it really that practical to have time-outs?
This is just saying that if the user in question NEVER DID ANYTHING on the site, and dont log in for over a year, then the account could be purged. If they never did anything to begin with, then even if they ever DID decide to come back, they most likely wouldnt even remember that they registered in the first place, and would make a new account anyways. Basically this is people who made accounts just to download like 1 video, then never came back.
